I need help removing the back of my computer so I can install my SDD. I was able to pry most of it but I got stuck on the bottom part where at the legs are. On on my model I can't remove the legs easily like the previous model and I'm scared to break something if I apply alot of force. Any suggestions?

Hi,

The below documented HP instructions should be helpful.  I suggest that you use a 3.5" SSHD as the drive cage is provisioned for a 3.5" form factor device. You other choice would be to find an adapter that will allow you to use a 2.5" SSD inside the existing drive cage.

Stand (including Hinge Cover) removal

Before you begin: Remove any CD or DVDs from the unit’s optical drive. Remember to detach all cables that connect to the PC. Whenever working on internal components, use an anti-static mat. Wear an ESD wrist strap attached to the PC when working with sensitive components that are inside the PC to avoid damaging them. Make sure to ground the chassis to the mat.

Steps

  1. Place the unit face down on a soft flat surface with the edge of the stand overhanging the edge of the table.
  2. Use your fingernail or a flat headed tool to pry off the small rubber cover on both sides of the hinge cover. Pry out the hinge cover and remove it from the bottom of the unit.
  3. Pull the small rubber cover out to the side on each side of the stand to access and loosen the two captured Philips #2 screws that secure the stand to the PC.
  4. Pull the stand off of the bottom of the PC.

Stand (including Hinge Cover) replacement

Steps

  1. To replace the stand, insert the stand into its well at the bottom of the unit.
  2. Pull out on the side rubber covers and tighten the two Philips #2 screws to secure the stand to the bottom of the unit.
  3. The hinge cover has three tabs on the front edge and two tabs on the rear edge that snap over edges on the inside of the rear cover stand well.
  4. To replace the hinge cover, align the three front edge tabs over their edges and snap the rear edges into place.
  5. Rotate and press the rubber side stand covers into place until the edges are flush with the hinge cover and the bottom of the rear cover.

Rear Cover removal

Before you begin: Remove the stand.

Steps

  1. Detach the single Philips #2 screw deep inside the stand attachment well area.
  2. Starting with the gap at the top of the unit, pry the rear cover partially off of the front of the unit. It may be helpful to use a small tool to help separate cover. Swing the bottom of the rear over carefully up and over the unit and place it down inside out on the table. (Note: Do NOT swing the top out. There are several connectors at the top that connect components on the cover to the LCD panel that could be damaged.)
  3. All system components except for the LCD panel kit can be serviced while the rear cover is partially removed in this state.
  4. If servicing the panel assembly or replacing the rear cover itself, you will need to separate the rear cover fully from the panel assembly. To do so:
    1. Untape the webcam cable from the panel, detach the webcam bracket assembly from the panel assembly and pull it over with its attached connector to the rear cover area.
    2. Detach the backlight connector from the panel and untape the backlight connector from the panel.
    3. Peel the LVDS cable carefully off of the panel and detach the LVDS connector from the panel.
    4. Disconnect the touch control cable from the touch control board and untape it from the panel assembly.
    5. The rear cover may now be fully removed from the panel assembly.

Rear Cover replacement

Steps

  1. (Skip to Step 3 if replacing rear cover only from a partially removed state)
If replacing the rear cover itself, remove the following components from the old rear cover and install onto the new rear cover – the hard drive, the optical drive, the card reader/power board, the motherboard, the webcam, the stand hinge, the motherboard shielding and the left and right speakers.
  2. To replace the rear cover assembly if it has been fully removed from the panel assembly, reconnect the LVDS cable to the panel and press its adhesive down onto the panel to secure the cable.  Replace the touch control cable to the touch control board and tape the connector to the panel. Tape the backlight connector down to the panel and reconnect the backlight connector to the panel. Replace the webcam bracket assembly to the top of the panel assembly and tape the webcam connector to the panel.
  3. There are several slots on the top inside edge of the rear cover assembly that fit over hooked tabs on the panel assembly. There are also hooked tabs on the rest of the inside edges of the rear cover that fit over slots on the panel assembly.
  4. To replace the rear cover assembly to the panel assembly, swing the bottom of the cover back around to align the cover over the panel assembly.
  5. Press all the hooked tabs and slots over each other until all have snapped into place.
  6. Replace the Philips#2 screw in the stand attachment well area to secure the rear cover to the PC.
