OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC GT22-1000i (6C1R8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Got a BIO update just now for my OMEN 45L and when the update ran it said updating from 16.1.32.2418 -> 16.1.32.2418. Rather pointless perhaps?

Hi @Crookers,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The update scenario you described, where the BIOS update version appears identical (16.1.32.2418 -> 16.1.32.2418), seems unusual at first glance, but there are potential reasons why this happens.

  • Patch for Existing Version: Even if the version number hasn’t changed, the update may include a minor patch or fix within the same version. This could address security vulnerabilities, improve compatibility, or correct an issue in the initial release of that version. The update might not have warranted a new version number.
  • Reinstallation to Correct Update Issues: Sometimes an identical update is pushed to ensure proper installation if the prior update encountered errors or incomplete deployment across systems. This ensures consistency.
  • Platform-Specific Fixes: The update might not change the BIOS code universally but could include adjustments for specific hardware configurations or certain regional builds.
  • Updated Installer or Mechanism: The BIOS package itself (e.g., sp155638) might have been updated for stability or compatibility improvements without altering the BIOS firmware version.
  • HP Support Assistant Quirk: Occasionally, HP Support Assistant might misreport updates or reapply an update due to detection errors or incorrect status reporting.

Why the Monthly Frequency?

HP appears to have been releasing BIOS updates monthly, which aligns with a focus on security patches or gradual enhancements for OMEN systems. The updates from earlier months (e.g., F.30 to F.31) may have introduced significant changes, whereas the most recent one might focus on small fixes or refinements.

What Can You Do?

  1. Check Update Logs: Look for a changelog or release notes for sp155638. These often include details about fixes or enhancements in the update.
  2. System Stability: If the system remains stable and functional after the update, it likely achieves its purpose, even if the changes aren’t immediately apparent.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Its odd with the first point as if you patch a version you should increase the version number (or the 2418-2419) so people know something has changed. As far as I'm concerned its the same as the version details are exactly the same.
