Microtower.
I was using the DVD cable (known good) as well as a spare, and the one I use for the data disk. All working, no change.
But in the meantime I ran scandisk again in safe mode- and it completed, and the thing has been up for 13 hours. I am reluctant to shut it down especially until I get some overdue work finished. Since I haven't rebooted, I can't tell if I still get the BIOHD . Weird, no?
I am thinking it would be wise to get that motherboard and new cables anyway, just in case. Haven't swapped one out since I left the field, but it's always SO much more fun on one's own machine.

Here is the Hardware Reference Guide for the computer. There is a section on Installing Additional Drives on Page 30. You can read the guide to see if it helps with your problem.

Thanks for that! So many other articles say the SATA order doesn't matter, this makes a lot of sense, since they're all wrong. And of course, everything is working fine again. I'll reconnect correctly tomorrow AM and give you 2 thumbs up. Thanks again!
(Oh, while you're still here- at one point I had a 3rd HD running off the 2nd CD cable- is this approved?)

You are very welcome, @palealien.
If the hard drive works with the cable it should be fine.

OK, so we had a power supply failure, a corrupt system drive, and two unrelated inexplicable HD failures. within a week. Solar flares, no doubt.
Anyway, it's all good now, thanks to the manual you sent I reconnected the cables to the proper slots, works as it did yesterday, but I will know it's right. I am still uncertain a new MB is worth $50 at this point since by the time I need it I should probably upgrade anyway.
Just glad I can still put up with his, I shudder to think what a "pro" would have charged. Not to mention probably using "Recover" as the only option, at the shop I used to work we did that all the time or lose money. I always wanted to get things perfect. Probably partly why am no longer employed there.
Cheers!

You would be pleasantly surprised by the increase in performance with a new computer. Technology changes so fast that a year old computer is behind the times -- sad, but true.
