@Mphonkie, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the Backspace key on your HP PC is not working, here are some step-by-step things you can try to fix it:
Basic Checks
- Restart Your PC
Sometimes a simple restart fixes keyboard issues. - Try Another App
Test the Backspace key in different applications (like Notepad, Word, browser) to see if it’s a software-specific issue. - External Keyboard Test
Plug in a USB keyboard and check if Backspace works. If it does, it may be a hardware issue with your built-in keyboard.
Software Fixes
Check for Sticky or Filter Keys
- Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard
- Turn off Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and Toggle Keys if they are on.
Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver
- Right-click Start > Device Manager
- Expand Keyboards
- Right-click your keyboard > Uninstall device
- Restart your PC (it will auto-reinstall the driver)
Check for Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
- Install any pending updates.
Run Keyboard Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot
- Select Keyboard > Run the troubleshooter
Hardware Fixes (if needed)
Clean the Keyboard
Dust or debris might be stuck under the key. Turn off the laptop and gently clean around the key using compressed air.
Check for Physical Damage
Is the key loose, sunken, or physically stuck? If yes, the keyboard might need a replacement or repair.
Optional: BIOS/UEFI Test (HP-specific)
- Restart your PC and repeatedly tap Esc to enter the Startup Menu.
- Press F2 for System Diagnostics
- Select Component Tests > Keyboard Test
- Follow the on-screen instructions to test the keyboard
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
