Every now and then my screen goes black with this message on the screen - "Important tasks are running - avoide shutting down".

Mouse pointer keeps moving to different points on the screen. Sometimes it looks like cursor, sometimes turns into hand, (Like when we click on something), and I am not able to do anything except shut it down using power button.

I updated windows, ran the windows malware scan and checks but did not find anything. I have attached a picture of the screen.

Anyone has any information about this?

Thanks for your help.

Hi @rb292

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the situation you are experiencing with the black screen message stating “Important tasks are running – avoid shutting down.” Thank you for sharing the details and confirming that you have already updated Windows and run malware scans.

Since the pointer changes shape and movement is restricted, it is important to verify the system processes and ensure the HP environment is functioning correctly.

To proceed, please follow these specific steps:

Run HP Diagnose & Fix from HP App

  • Open the HP App on your laptop.
  • Select Diagnose & Fix.
  • Allow the tool to run a complete check. This will automatically identify and repair issues related to system performance and background tasks.

Update BIOS and Drivers from HP Support

  • Visit the HP Support page for your product (HP 14-cf200 series).
  • Download and install the latest BIOS update and chipset drivers.
  • Reference: HP 14-cf200 Drivers

Check for HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run a System Test (Quick Test followed by Extensive Test).
  • This will confirm if hardware is functioning correctly.
  • Reference: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support

These steps will help isolate whether the message is triggered by HP utilities, background processes, or hardware checks. Please let me know if the message appears after running these diagnostics, so we can continue with precise guidance.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Regards,
