Hi,
Was upgrading my GPU, And have now found out I broke the GPU release tab. Is this really essential or just for easier release ?
If so what should I do.

The tab provides a convenient way to lock the full size board down. Not all motherboards have locking tabs on x16 size slots.
The majority of the purpose for the lock is not to provide mechanical strength, it's to make sure that the card is fully inserted. As long as you can ensure that the card is fully inserted, then the slot having a latch, or not, is not relevant.
When you screw down the GPU boards bracket, make sure the back of the card does not rise up out of the socket. This is not likely on a quality case and system design. If you see the back of the card start to rise up you need to adjust the bracket with a washer or shim to keep board level.
If the board ls crowded then you may need a mirror tool to examine the socket and ensure the board fully inserted.
