HP Slim Desktop PC S01-aF2000i (52Z15AV)

Replaced my desktop PC with a new HP Slim Desktop S01 running Windows 11,.  I chose this model specifically because it has an integral DVD drive.
I've always used Windows Media Player to burn audio CD's for playing on my hifi, I'm now unable to do this.  Using the same CD-R's as previously, they format OK but when I try to burn audio tracks I get a message saying 'insert a blank CD', then it ejects the CD and repeats the message.  Tried using File Explorer 'burn to disc' and I get a message saying 'Windows can't burn to the current disc. Please insert a writable disk into Drive D'.
Tried using DVD-RW and no different.
Any ideas please?

@MaryM51, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding burning audio CD !

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand how important it is to be able to burn audio CDs, and I'd be happy to assist you with this issue. Since you've already tried multiple discs, let's go through some troubleshooting steps to help resolve this.

Check If the Drive Recognizes Blank CDs

  • Insert a blank CD-R and open File Explorer.
  • Click on This PC and check if the disc is detected under your DVD drive.
  • If it does not show as a writable disc, the system may not be recognizing it correctly.

Run the Windows Built-in Troubleshooter

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  • Scroll down and run the Recording Audio and Hardware and Devices troubleshooters.

Update the DVD Drive Drivers

  • Right-click the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
  • Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives, right-click on your DVD drive, and select Update DriverSearch automatically for drivers.
  • If that doesn’t help, right-click the device and select Uninstall Device, then restart your PC. This will allow Windows to reinstall the necessary drivers.

Check for Firmware or Driver Updates on HP Support

  • Visit the HP Support website and enter your PC model (HP Slim Desktop S01-aF2000i).
  • Look under Drivers & Software > Firmware to see if there are any available updates for your optical drive.

Test Burning with a Different Disc Type

  • Some drives work best with specific disc formats. If you’re using CD-R, try CD-RW or a different brand of CD-R.

If the issue persists, please let me know, and we can look into additional troubleshooting options.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your response, I'd already gone through all the driver checks and found nothing outdated.  The drive recognised the disk.  The drive also recognised disks burned on my previous Windows 10 system and played MP3 files created by it.  The problem was solved by using a new unformatted disk and bypassing the format.  The burn then worked first time on the unformatted disk, and the disk plays fine on my hifi.
