HP ProDesk 400 G3 Microtower PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

I have recently acquired a HP Prodesk 400 G3 MT. I have upgraded the CPU from an i5 6500 to an i7 6700 and also added a GTX 1650 LP which is all working great.

I have spent many hours scrolling through forum post's, Ebay listings and watching Youtube videos and yet i still have not got a clear understanding as to what my CPU Cooler upgrade options are.

Some say the mounting points for the cooler on my motherboard are proprietary and therefor i have to stick with a better HP Branded option however i am not tech savvy enough to know exactly what is proprietary in comparison to a standard 1151 LGA cooler.

Below is the cooler i currently have installed that i believe to be the stock cooler for this system.

The below link is what i suspect may be my best option however it is in the US and i am in the UK. The seller also has quite a few poor ratings so i don't want to risk purchasing this exact one.

NEW HP ProDesk 600 800 705 G2 G3 G4 Tower & SFF Heatsink Fan Assembly 810281-001

I did attempt to purchase a Prodesk 400 G1 cooler (See Below) to try out as it was about £7 on Ebay however the mounting points are way off. They are a rectangle shape compared to the existing cooler currently installed being square. It was also very small due to it being for a SFF system so probably wouldn't have helped with temps anyway.

Is the above 810281-001 cooler from the US my only option in terms of upgrading without having to make any physical modifications to the system or are there any other options for vertical heat-pipe styled coolers for my system?

The reason for wanting to upgrade to a vertical styled cooler is that there is a rear case fan in line with the CPU and having a vertical cooler would mean the hot air exhausted from the cooler would then be blown straight out of the case via the rear case fan. That and i would also like better CPU temps as the temps jump very quickly under high loads (Running benchmarks etc) with the current cooler.

I also just enjoy trying to squeeze performance out of these slightly older 'Business' Desktops! 😁

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

So just a quick update for anyone that may stumble across this thread in the future. I ordered the cooler from America with part number 810281-001 however whilst the threaded studs on the cooler did line up perfectly with the mounting holes on the motherboard, the threaded screws on the cooler where to big and would not screw into the existing holes on the motherboard.

There is possibly a method to resolve this by making some modifications however my initial intention was to find a straight swap and i have been unable to so that concludes this little project for now.

Check out the video. A BeQuiet Shadow Rock 130W LP fan may be an option.

Hi Erick,

Many thanks for your suggestions.

I have watched this particular video many times and unfortunately removing the motherboard entirely and prying off the OEM backing plate is not something I'm looking to do at this time.

Whilst it would solve my issue I would like to find something that is a simple straight swap for what is currently installed.

Thanks anyway!

You're welcome.

Unfortunately, there is no simple swap.

Hi Erico,

First of all, apologies for miss-spelling your name in my previous reply, I hadn't realised this had autocorrected.

I have taken a gamble and ordered the cooler from the US as mentioned in my original post and will see how I get on with that...

If that doesn't fit, I may attempt to modify the cooler if it is feasible. Failing that I will most likely give up and just focus on improving the airflow within the case.

It is only for a bit of fun after all!

Thanks again for your time I do appreciate it!
