CPU Fan and Heatsink on HP Pavilion 500-242ea

Hi everyone,

The fan on this computer has died: 

HP Pavilion 500-242ea

I bought a replacement fan and heatsink for it, but the only problem is that it needs brackets on the motherboard so I can mount it.

I cant seem to find a suitable one sadly, any of you know where I can purchase one for cheap?

I dont mind buying a second hand fan/heatsink either.

What HS/Fan kit did you buy?

It should have included mounting hardware.

Amazon has a Noctua HS/Fan kit (works on an FM2 socket) with hardware. The cooling system is 165 mm tall. It may not fit in your chassis. You need to purchase a similar kit that will fit in your chassis with brackets, screws, and a MB backplate.

I am surprised the CPU cooling system you purchased did not include a MB mounting kit.

Yeah I am surprised as well that it didnt bring one.

Its been so difficult to find a bracket as well but I think I found one on ebay, now the main problem is, how am I able to put the backplate that goes behind the motherboard? I cant seem to find a way to take off the casing where the motherboard is currently installed.

Sadly enough you are right, i have a similar cooling system from the one you posted for amazon and it would be a bit too big to fit in.

You are welcome.

How was the existing heatsink/fan installed? There should be a backplate.

If not, you will have to disconnect all cabling and  some components such as PCIe riser cards. Take some pics before you begin so you have a guide to use when reinstalling components and cabling connections.

Then remove the MB screws so you can remove the MB from the chassis.

Disconnect from AC power. Work in a static free, non-conductive, environment. Use an anti static wrist strap.

Not sure what casing means. Are you talking about the side panel?

Hi guys,

So i bought a replacement heatsink and fan and it didnt work.

The fan tries to spin at the very first part but it just fails.

The post boot up just shows 511-cpu fan not detected

Press F1 to continue.

If i press f1, then it goes on to boot windows until the cpu gets too hot and powers off the computer.

The clip base seemed to not have fit this model either sadly enough, so had to return it.

I am running out of options as to how to get the fan to spin on this computer 😞

I have now resolved this by connecting the cpu fan (4pin) to the system fan pins (3pin) and vice versa.

At least the fans spin now.

Hi vbjr

You have the chassis fan connected to the MB CPU fan header. You have the CPU fan connected to a MB chassis fan header.

It is working but you may have a problem keeping the CPU cool.

This configuration will have the chassis fan responding to CPU temps while the CPU fan responds to chassis temps. Both fans will spin faster as CPU and chassis temps increase but the CPU fan will be responding to internal chassis temperature deltas.

Watch the CPU temps when stressing the CPU to avoid throttling or damage to the CPU.
