@fredodz,

HP Notebook PCs - System Fan (90b, 90f) Error Message on Startup

When starting the computer, the system fan might spin faster and become louder, and one of the following error messages might display on the screen:
  • The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.
  • Continued operation is not recommended and may cause unpredictable behavior that could result in random shutdown, data loss or possible system damage. The system will shut down in 15 seconds. To prevent shutdown and continue operation, press the Enter key now.
  • System Fan (90b)
  • System Fan (90f) This error indicates that a problem exists related to the heat removal system.
This message indicates that the system fan is not spinning at the expected speed or a problem exists related to the heat removal system. This message occurs to help prevent costly damage to the computer.
To fix this error, use the following steps:
  1. Press Enter to clear the message and allow the system to boot to the Windows Desktop.
  2. Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.
  3. After you remove the dust, turn on the computer. If the error message persists, continue with these steps
    • Thoroughly remove dust from all internal cooling components.
    • Make sure wires from the system and CPU fans are connected securely to the motherboard.
    • Confirm the system fan blades spin correctly, and the fan is not producing loud noises. If not working correctly, replace the system fan.
    • Go to a tobacco store, get a few pipe cleaners. These resemble a fuzzy wand that you can insert between the metal heatsink blades to get the dust out. No need to remove the CPU fan, just wand the pipe cleaner into the crevices.

I believe I need a new  fan. The question now  is how  do you know what type of CPU fan is comparable with my HP desktop

@fredodz,

You have an HP 270-p0024d, here is the service manual.

1) Unplug the power cord from the chassis.

2) Here is how to measure the fan , then look at the leads to the motherboard, is it 3 or 4 wires?,

If #2 is correct, it is an 80mm 4 wire fan. That means 80mm x 25mm PWM fan.

After you answer this, I shall continue with links for a suitable fan.

Let's say you now have the fan, OK?

3) Put a dab of paint (finger nail is OK) on one of the corners.  We will get back to why. later.

4) Looking down into the 4 corner holes of the fan you will see the mounting screws. It takes a thin phillips to get into it. These screws are into the aluminum heatsink.  You unscrew them.

5) Unplug the fan power cable from the motherboard. Plug is top of the board, above CPU.

6) Starting looking on the sides of the fan casing. There is an arrow pointing to the direction of the exhaust. You want your new fan to be mounted to it also follows the same exhaust direction.  When you have the same, put a dab of paint on upper corner of the fan. So, now you have determined which side is UP.

7) Mount the new fan, and plug in the power plug.
