Hello Gals and Guys -

I have a HP Pavilion TP001-0066 desktop computer.  I would like a upgrade the CPU.  The TP001-0066 uses the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, which is a 65w CPU, so i'm thinking my best option would b the 65w Ryzen 9 3900 that's also a 65w CPU.  Is this a viable plan?  Thanks for any help.

I wondered at first why I couldn't find your PC. It isn't a TP001-0066, it is a  TP01-0066. One too many zeros does make a big difference. 🤣

Unfortunately that is probably not going to work.

It is not on the list of supported processors for your motherboard. See the document at the link below.

Another reason is that the specifications, when comparing the two processors, only show 200 Mhz difference at boost  between them. That is not enough to warrant the change or the risk of it not working. For it to be worthwhile, it should be 300 Mhz or better and compatible.

Thanks for the reply Erico.  I appreciate the help and my bad on the extra oh.  Just so were on the same page, I was referring to the Ryzen 9 3900 and not the Ryzen 9 3900x.

Between the 3900 and the 3700x it looks like the main difference is the caches sizes are a bit bigger on the Ryzen 9 3900.  The clock speed is higher on the 3700x, but the 3900 has more cores.  They're both 65w CPU and the the release dates are close, so it seemed like an inexpensive way to get a little more oomph as opposed to buying a new CPU.  Thanks again.

That processor still may not work in your motherboard.

That is a financial risk I wouldn't be willing to take. Once you open it and try it in the motherboard, the vendor you bought it from is not likely to accept a return.
