So I have a OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0005no and I’m gonna replace the CPU cooler and was just wondering what type of CPU cooler bracket this system uses and if I would have to replace the backplate bracket.

Hi @56122,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
Replacing the CPU cooler on your OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0005no is a great way to enhance cooling performance. Here's some guidance on the type of CPU cooler bracket used and whether you may need to replace the backplate:
- What is the specific CPU model installed in your Obelisk desktop (e.g., Intel Core i7-8700)? Knowing this will help determine compatibility with cooling solutions.
- Are you replacing the cooler with a stock or aftermarket option (e.g., air cooler or liquid cooler)?
- Have you checked if the new cooler includes a compatible mounting bracket for your CPU socket?
Understanding the Bracket and Backplate
Stock Configuration:
- The OMEN by HP Obelisk typically comes with a standard cooler that uses the Intel LGA 1151 socket. Intel sockets usually have a pre-installed backplate that is compatible with most coolers designed for LGA 115x or 1200 sockets.
Aftermarket Coolers:
- Many aftermarket coolers, like those from Cooler Master, Noctua, or Corsair, include their own brackets and mounting hardware. These often use the existing backplate unless it is proprietary.
- If your new cooler explicitly requires replacing the backplate, you will need to confirm that the case design allows for backplate removal or modification.
Check Case Compatibility:
- Ensure the cooler dimensions fit your case, especially if you’re upgrading to a large air cooler or liquid cooling solution. Confirm there’s clearance for the height, radiator, or fan placement.
Steps to Determine Backplate Requirements
Inspect the Current Cooler:
- Remove the existing CPU cooler and examine how it mounts to the motherboard. Note whether the screws go into the backplate or directly into the motherboard.
Refer to the Cooler Manual:
- Review the installation instructions for your new cooler to see if it uses a universal mounting system compatible with LGA 1151.
Check the Backplate Design:
- If the existing backplate is removable and the new cooler requires its proprietary backplate, you’ll need to swap it. If the backplate is integrated into the motherboard (unlikely), you'll need a cooler compatible with the stock design.

Thanks for the answer. Really helpful, unfortunately this message reached me too late. So now im stuck with a CPU cooler that’s not compatible and I need to remove the motherboard but I can’t because some HP employee stripped my screws. Any suggestions?
