Mike_Envy -One approach other HP Community members including myself have applied is:
1.) Install a free program such as "Real Temp" -this will show current CPU temperatures and the distance to max temp and 'thermal status'. Link: Real Temp (3.70) Download | TechPowerUp
2.) Concurrently, run a freeware CPU stress program such as "HeavyLoad" to test how your CPU fan is going to respond. When the program stresses your CPU to the max, you should observe the fan-speed ramp up considerably. Link: JAM Software - Customer Area (jam-software.de)
Assuming your CPU fan is doing what it is supposed to do, but CPU heat issues is still a concern to you, say when you upgraded your CPU, you could also look into upgrading your CPU fan, CPU heatsink, adding an additional cooling fan, etc. And if you feel up to it, going way off the reservation -so to speak, is also an option for the not so fainted of heart. Good luck!
