HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1110 Desktop PC

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade this cpu. I am aware of the processor upgrade information listed on this page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02980014

I am wondering if any other processors work that aren't 'officially' supported by HP, but are supported by the H61 chipset would work, such as the IVY-bridge intel i7-3770k or a Sandy-bridge Xeon E3 (both of which have the correct socket). I am willing to upgrade other things such as the PSU, if necessary.

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

Other compatible processors will fit the socket.

HP validates specific processors.

HP does not support "k" processors unless HP validates the processor. HP's BIOS does not support overclocking the processor.

You could try it. Make sure you can get a refund if the BIOS chokes when using an unsupported processor.

Thank you for your reply. I think will try to give upgrading to an ivy bridge non-k a try. I'll report back on if i'm successful. If anyone else knows of any success with jumping to ivy bridge please let me know!

Hi Maxh1,

Try it.

You usually need a BIOS update to support a processor that has not been validated by the motherboard manufacturer.

So, I don't know if this upgrade is going to be successful. Make sure you can get a refund from the seller if it does not work.

Thanks for the guidance.

I went with the 2600 for safe keeping. CPU arrived today and the upgrade went smoothly. I used Arctic silver 5 as the new thermal compound.

Only problem remaining is a used gt730 I bought off ebay.. It fits the desktop perfect but no boot / screen on it. Instead, I hear 3 beeps spaced out 30 seconds apart, followed by 3 quick beeps and another spaced out beep.

I suspect the card is DOA as I cant boot my Mac Pro 5,1 using it either, but I can't seem to figure out what pattern the documentation these beeps refer to. I'm referencing this page by the way: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07107

It looks like "The embedded controller has timed .... from graphics initialization." fits the pattern I hear, but that section is  for the newer desktops.

Hi Maxh1,

Your PC is circa 2011.

The GT 730 requires a UEFI BIOS.

Your PC does not sport the required BIOS and cannot be upgraded to a UEFI BIOS. So this could be the boot problem.

Does your PC boot correctly using Intel onboard graphics?

This HP Support site (Link) shows BIOS error codes for PCs made at various times.

A 3.3 BIOS error cadence (PCs made before 2015) suggests the CPU is not installed correctly or it may be bad. Or CPU socket pins were damaged when installing the new CPU or removing the old CPU.

I don't see a 3.1 BIOS error cadence for PCs made in 2011.  There is a BIOS CPU 3.1 error code for PCs made before 2010.

Hi,

I apologize as in my last reply I was actually using a GT630, not 730. However, I have also tested a GT730 which also is low profile and has no molex input. The card's fan spins on full and windows boots up fine but still no detection of the actual card (in Device manager or by Geforce experience install).

I am slightly confused by the UEFI statement. On my PC's bios, it gives me the option to boot via legacy OR UEFI. I have made an install on a separate HDD via UEFI /GPT and am able to boot into windows 10 that way. Neither the GPT disk nor the MBR disk are capable of detecting the GPU, which still has its fan spinning at full sped. Is there anything else I need to change? Something in the bios?

I also tried attaching a 450W PSU to the motherboard / CPU / HDD rather than the built in 220W supply, in case it cannot provide enough power to the PCIE port. There was no difference.

Max
