@DivinexBlessing,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

The best possible processors compatible with your HP 280 G1 Microtower are:

1.) i7-4790K (88-watt TDP), as seen here: HP 280 G1 MT Performance Results - UserBenchmark
2.) i7-4790 (84-watt TDP)
3.) i7-4770K (84-watt TDP)
4.) i7-4770 (84-watt TDP)

The i7-4790K -if you are interested in it, can be purchased for around $70, such as via this trusted eBay Seller: Intel Core i7-4790K 4GHz FCLGA1150 Quad-Core Processor | eBay.

An i7-4790 can be purchased for as little as $29 such as via this trusted eBay Seller: Intel Core i7-4790 3.60GHz Quad-Core CPU Processor SR1QF LGA1150 - C1572 | eBay.

The pros are better processing power (from a 4-Cores, 4-Threads processor, to a 4-Cores, 8-Threads processor and running at higher frequencies), the cons are that these processors have higher TDPs: from 65-watt to either 84- or 88-watt TDPs, meaning, generating more heat.

However, it must be noted that your MT is likely fitted with the 95-watt TDP rated heatsink with p/n: 667727-001 "Intel processor heat sink assembly - Intel 1155 95 Watt", so that upgrading even to the 88-watt i7-4790K shouldn't be an issue:

@NonSequitur777

thank you for the help.
I currently have a msi 970 paired with the i5 4590 and I think I’m gonna take your advice and go to the i7 4790k but I was also thinking about going to a Radeon rx 580 8gb and from the research I’ve done I should be handle it without bottle necking. I’m really confused on figuring out if it will fit though cause all the dimensions I go to look at are different from one another. Also since I’m currently using the 970 currently that needs a 500w psu minimum the same psu should run the rx 580 right ?

sorry for all the questions

appreciate the wisdom

@DivinexBlessing,

I assume that you got a 300-watt ATX power supply -that may be sufficient for a GTX 970 as seen here, but it is not powerful enough to power an RX 580 as seen here.

Looks like you may have to consider upgrading your power supply.  My recommendation would be to look for a 500-watt ATX power supply, and make sure its dimensions (LxWxH) are a fit for your case.

How does one tell how big his power supply is

@DivinexBlessing,

First, you turn off your PC, disconnect from power, push your power button for 4 seconds in order to discharge any residual power, open up your PC, and make the LxWxH measurements of your current power supply.

Next, take a look at ATX power supplies, such as this Amazon Corsair CX550 purchase option: Amazon.com: CORSAIR CX Series 550 Watt 80+ Bronze Certified Non-Modular Power Supply : Electronics.  Then look for the tech details:

And now you can ascertain if this power supply will or will not fit in your desktop.

If my 970 is under powered would I lose out on performance? Cause I bought this pc off of Facebook and tbh I have no clue what was done to it I just know it had the I5-4590 and gtx 970. Do you think the guy just left the stock psu? Also do you possibly have the dimensions for the hp 280 g1 micro tower so I can tell if the 580 would fit inside ? Been looking for them but can’t seem to make sense of it

really appreciate the help

@DivinexBlessing,

All right, see if these RX 580 dimensions (especially the 4.76in height) would fit in your PC:
