What I would like to do is speed up my HP 24-f0047c All In One computer by going to a 1Tb SSC device. The motherboard has a socket for a M.2 type device and a SATA hard drive. I would like to copy the HD to the SSD and have the M.2 SSD become the boot device, and hopefully the hard drive can coexist and become the backup drive for the boot SSD drive.

According to the support page - One M.2 socket 3, 2280 type for SSD
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05947712
Check in the BIOS to verify that the M.2 socket can be selected as the first boot device. If yes, then the scenerio you propose should be possible.
P.S. according to the Crucial site, it is supported using one of their SSD internal drives

I'm not an HP employee.
