As the title says I would like to know if I can install an upgrade of RAM with a higher MHz alongside the existing lower MHz of RAM ( 16GB 2400 MHz alongside the existing 16GB 1600MHz ) ? Also if it would work at all or  would I be better off just sticking to 1600MHz across the board, I apologize if this question is remedial but I'm relatively new to computers and upgrades etc .

I have a  HP Prodesk 600 G1 MIT SFF Desktop, I have already upgraded the CPU to an Intel Core i7-4770 CPU, its running Windows 10 pro at this time, has a 1TB HDD and 16GB RAM existing memory, i have used this forum to look at other upgrades I would like to add but cant seem to find the specific answers I need concerning RAM  and any help regarding this or any other upgrades would be greatly appreciated

Your PC uses DDR3-1600 memory and 2400 MHz memory is DDR4 which runs at a lower voltage, has a different number of contact pins.  The slot in the memory circuit board is cut in a different place than it is on a DDR3 memory chip which would make it impossible to fit in a DDR3 memory slot.


Your PC supports a maximum of 4 x 8 GB of DDR3-1600 memory.

 

As far as other upgrades, you may want to consider replacing the 3.5" mechanical hard drive with a faster performing 2.5" SATA solid state drive (SSD).

Yes, I can.

 

I'd go with a WD Blue SA510 2.5".

 

This is the 1 TB drive for example:

 

WD HDSSD 2.5" 1TB Blue™ SA510 PC 3D SSD 7mm : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

 

Because the drive is smaller than the 3.5" mechanical hard drive, you will need to purchase a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter so the smaller drive fits where the existing drive is mounted now.

 

I recommend this model because it is the same size as a 3.5" drive.

 

They used to sell these on Amazon.UK but I don't see any now, but eBay, UK has them.

 

They have them on the Amazon.US site, but that would not do you any good.

You install the SSD in the adapter, remove the 4 anti-vibration mounting screws from the 3.5" drive, place them in the same location on the 3.4" drive adapter and lock the assembly into place.

 

The SATA and power cables should go right where they are now.

thanks so much for all your help today, I have ordered 16GB RAM today, just opened the tower up and it looks like all the slots are full so I'm guessing I have 4 x 4gb instead of 2 x 8GB LOL, I will look into the SSD in the next month or so, thank you again and i will let you know when its sorted and how its going.

Yes, the PC must have 4 x 4 GB of memory since all the slots are full.

 

When you add the 2 x 8 GB of memory you have to install it in alternate slots.

 

In other words, 4 + 8 + 4 + 8 or 8 + 4 + 8 +4.

 

Not 8 + 8 + 4 + 4 or 4 + 4 + 8 + 8
