Helllo,
Can anyone tell me if I can upgrade Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz, 3201 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) to an i7 processor? This system is 14 years old. I have upgraded the PSU to corsair 750w, have installed 16gb ram, and 1tb SSD drive, and gtx1660 Geforce GPU. Or can I upgrade the motherboard with new processor? If so, which motherboard would fit in same casing. Most people tell to just buy a new system, but I feel if can upgrade processor or switch out motherboard to modernize and increase performance. I believe I can still save a bunch of money by upgrading processor
or switch out motherboard with new processor.

Hi:
Below is the link to the parts list for your PC.
It has an IONA-GL8E motherboard which supports the following Intel 1st Gen Core processors:
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
Intel Core i7-8xx (Lynnfield core)
Intel Core i5-7xx (Lynnfield core)
Intel Core i5-6xx (Clarkdale core)
Intel Core i3-5xx (Clarkdale core)
One disturbing thing I found was this discussion where someone installed an i7-860 and it didn't work for some reason.
(1) Solved: MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E) CPU upgrade problem - HP Support Community - 7634164
But I helped this person several years ago who installed an i7-870 processor in a PC with the same motherboard and that worked fine once he figured out the issue with the graphics card.

That might be a good idea even though the specs indicate the i7-860 should have worked.
The latest BIOS update is 5.15, and was written to be run on Windows 7, so if you are using Windows 10, I don't know what will happen if you run the update on W10.
It might not be a good idea to try that.
