Elitedesk 800 DM G4
Microsoft Windows 11

I want to create a silk purse out of a sow's ear by making the ultimate upgrades to an EliteDesk 800 mini G4.

The steps I envision are:

1.  Replace the heatsink with the 95 watt version.

2.  Replace the CPU with an I9-9900k.

3.  Replace the power supply brick with a 200 watt brick (608431-002) from a Pavilion (?).

4.  Install a 4 TB NVME system drive (Win 11 Pro) in the M.2 connector nearest the chassis edge.

5.  Install an M.2 NVME to PCIE adapter in the other M.2 connector snaking the adapter cable though the unused option board opening.

6.  Install an RTX 3060 in the PCIE adapter.

7.  Power the RTX 3060 with a power supply brick from a Dell laptop (P/N D3860, 220 watts).

8.  Play games, do renderings, create content!

Disregarding how stupid you might think the idea is, does anyone out there see a reason this will not work??

Please advise, and

TIA,

Larry

@imacflier,

Welcome to our HP Community Forum!

You have come to the right place.

Btw, an HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM cannot be fitted with 9th gen Intel processors.  The most powerful CPU for this platform would be an i7-8700K, which I fitted in my HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM upgrade project: Solved: Upgrading an HP EliteDesk 800 65W G4 Desktop Mini (DM) - HP Support Community - 8708671.

Once I was done with this upgrade, the results did not disappoint: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM 65W (TAA) Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Hope this information is what you are looking for.

HMMMM, well if I cannot use an I9-9900 in an EliteDesk Mini G4 then I will try the same steps using a DM G5!

Thanks for the comment and info!

@imacflier,

You are welcome.

And yes, an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 DM (65W) will accept an i9-9900K (95-watt TDP). You'll be the first HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini on UserBenchMark to show you can do this: UserBenchmark: HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini Compatible Components.  This wasn't the first time a 95-watt processor was shown to work in an 800 G5 DM (i7-8700K): HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Anyway, when running a 95-watt processor, I strongly recommend upgrading your primary power supply to the 230-watt, part number: 693714-001, as sold via eBay, for example: hp 693714-001 for sale | eBay.  You can purchase one of these for less than $18.  Pennies to the dollar.

In order to make an eGPU work at the best possible performance (that is, 4x speed), you'll have to use an M.2 NVMe to PCIe x4 dock/eGPU stand, like the one I use: PCIe 4.0 x4 Riser Cable 64Gbs M.2 Key M for NVMe External Graphics Card Stand Bracket R43SG PCI-E fo..., which requires a secondary (which is synced with your primary power supply) PSU, such as the 250-watt Dell DA-2 8-pin power supply (see: Dell DA-2 Power supply for sale | eBay) -depending if your graphics card of choice requires less than 250 watt, or a 24-pin standard ATX power supply up to 1,000 watt capacity -in case you want to connect your 800 G5 DM, say, to an RTX 4090 Ti. 😉

Good luck!

Kind Regards,
