Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Yes, you can use an RTX 5070 in your HP Z840 Workstation.
I base this on the information one can glean from this Userbenchmark site: UserBenchmark: HP Z840 Workstation Compatible Components. You'll see that just about all modern graphics cards are shown to be compatible, including the RTX A6000, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4080, and the RTX 3090.
For example, one of its Users installed an RTX A6000, which has a 300-watt TDP, whereas an RTX 5070 has a 250-watt TDP.
The only install aspect you need to watch for is the length of an RTX 5070. I would suggest opting for a smaller-sized (dual fan) model, such as this example: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/msi-rtx-5070-ventus-2x-oc.b12094.

Outstanding: rest assured I am keenly anticipating your feedback/experience!
Make sure you download the exact RTX 5070 driver from here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/: Drivers Home > NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 | Windows 10 64-bit ("NVIDIA Studio Driver - What is a Studio Driver? If you are a content creator who prioritizes stability and quality for creative workflows including video editing, animation, photography, graphic design, and livestreaming, choose Studio Drivers.")
Driver Version: 572.83, Release Date: Tue Mar 18, 2025.

Will do on the driver. I'll keep you posted.
Now, all we have to do is devise a solution that allows the Z840 to use Windows 11. I know this group will do it. If nothing else, it's the challenge.
Stay well,
John

Well, what do you know: here is good news yet again: there are a number of reliable, effective and proven methods to allow so-called "unsupported" hardware such as the HP Z840 Workstation platforms to be upgraded to Windows 11.
Here is but one of the most recent and most convenient/easy to follow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSrmhhigEhY&t=332s&ab_channel=Tips2Fix.
I have used this method myself, and W11 runs wonderfully.

Hi,
My ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX ™ 5070 12GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card arrived today. Note, this is the three-fan version. Unfortunately, it is too long for the chassis by about 1/8" to 3/16".
I wanted to give it a try. It has Mil-Spec components and a great price on Amazon if your chassis can handle the length.
Regards,
John

That is too bad that the card didn't fit -with size in mind, that's why I recommended a smaller-sized (dual fan) model.
Are you going to exchange the card for a smaller-sized RTX 5070?

Your suggestion was a good one. However, I've been looking for a dual-fan model. My research shows that they are out of stock. I've included my name on two "Contact me when they come available" lists. As promised, I'll be happy to report my tests/impressions if I find one.
In the meantime, thanks for the link on how to install Windows 11 on the HP Z840.

John

Hi,
The two-fan RTX 5070 arrived today. While waiting, I used the link to install Windows 11 on my HP Z840 with dual E5-2643 v3 processors. The install went flawlessly, making it a painless upgrade.
However, there is a weird issue. Windows 11 is working fine. I have 2 NASs on the system. Windows found the Black Armor NAS without issue, and the mapping went without incident. Windows cannot find the MYCLOUDPR2100. The ip address is correct, and I can access the drive using the ip address and ping it successfully using the cmd line. I've followed the troubleshooting steps meticulously; discovery and print sharing on. web credentials with correct password, SMB v1 accepted.
The interesting thing for you is that it works find on the Intel i7 machine. However, I have the same issue on the Xeon-based 360-Z with a Xeon E-2176 running @ 2.7 MHz. Error code: 0x80070035.
Any ideas?
John
