So i moved to se asia with a computer from canada. I asked a help service at HP about using my computer there and the support guy told me i could flick this switch and plug it into a 220v outlet. Then he said if when i plug it in it starts making a loud beeping sound to unplug it right away. He also said not to use it too long in this mode. Because of this i ended up buying a transformer just to be safe. Now however i cant use this transformer anymore so im lookig at this switch solution again. The guy communicated with me via chat and clearly did not speak english well. When i asked for clarification on things he would answer a different question, and sometime im pretty sure he was just copying/pasting answers into the chat whcih werent really the questions i was asking. I have heard that this switch being dangerous is bs but im looking for a second opinion. Sorry for the wall of text.

Tl;dr hp help guy said its not safe to use the voltage switch on the back of this desktop for too long/it might not work. Is this true or bs?

Hi,

You can use the voltage switch. There is no danger involved. It is designed to be used in different countries with different voltages. Turn off the computer and remove the power cable from power supply on back of computer. Now use a screwdriver to move the switch completely to the other position. Put the power cord back in and boot the computer.

These power supplies are designed to be used with different voltage. More modern ones will actually switch automatically to different voltages.

Hope it helps,

David

Flipped the switch, plugged it in, and it works fine. Thanks for calming my nerves.
