Portable SSD P500
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Portable SSD P500 that is not working.

Windows does not recognize it on three computers

I have spent 2 days reading post and troubleshooting it

When I try to get support from the HP the web site, it does not recognize the serial number and I can not get any further in the process.

It has a 3 year warranty and I bought it only 11 months ago on Amazon

Please Help

Hi @BKARK

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. I reviewed the post. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Commendable diagnosis, superb troubleshooting, and splendid description of the issue before posting. Hats off to you on that score. 😊

It seems like your HP P500 SSD is experiencing a significant issue, and it could be related to a variety of factors, including hardware failure, firmware corruption, or even a damaged connection.

Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to see if we can resolve this:

1. Check in Disk Management (Windows)

Your SSD may be facing a partition issue or could be corrupted. You can check this using Disk Management:

  1. Open Disk Management:
    • Press Windows + X and select Disk Management.
  2. Check for the SSD:
    • Look for the HP P500 SSD in the list of drives. If it’s not listed or has any unusual status (like "Unallocated" or "Not Initialized"), it could indicate a failure or partition corruption.
  3. Fix Partition Issues:
    • If you see your SSD but with errors or unallocated space, you may need to delete the existing partition and create a new one:
      • Right-click on the SSD and select Delete Volume (this will erase all data, so make sure to back up anything you can).
      • After deleting the partition, right-click the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume to reformat and partition it.

2. Check for Firmware Updates

Firmware issues can often cause glitches in SSD performance. If possible, check if there is a firmware update available for the HP P500 SSD.

Visit the HP support page for your specific SSD model, or look on other trusted SSD tool sites

Firmware updates can sometimes resolve issues with drive performance, including problems with recognition, download speed, or other glitches.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your response, When I go to disk management nothing shows except my internal hard drive and partitions.

Note when I first put the SSD P500 1Tb in the USB C  (I have used several cables and USB's) Windows 10 makes the notification sound and shows in the task bars "show hidden icons" area. But soon I get a windows fly out that says ... "USB device not recognized". Then all sign of the drive goes away. .... I have a screen shot.

As far as getting support from HP! When I try to go through the process and add my SSD P500 1T, HP site tells me my serial number is not recognized and I "CAN NOT" go any further on the site.

I have a picture of the Serial number and Part number if needed

Thanks Bill
