Microsoft Windows 11

I'm trying to upgrade my Elitedesk G1 800 SFF from 16GB to 32 GB. All the literature I've read tells me this is possible, but when I install 4 x 8GB DDR3 12800 panels, the systems refuses to boot and beeps 5 times.

My BIOS version is 2.78.

I've tested the RAM in other PC's and they work fine.

Is there a BIOS setting I've missed, or is there something I should be doing?

hi

Memory
1600-MHz DDR3 SDRAM; (4) DIMM slots enabling up to 32 GB, dual channel memory support

it should be ok..
module test one by one, in each slot?

HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Tower HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Small Form Factor HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Ultra-Slim Desk...

Illustrated Parts & Service Map - HP EliteDesk 800 G1 - Small Form Factor

unless using a particular model of memory?

" I install 4 x 8GB DDR3 12800  "

original module and newer, or all new?

@Tbergman,

[EDIT: sorry / mes excuses @Prométhée, I was working on a response for @Tbergman and got distracted -posted it only to realize you had already responded.]

First thing to check is to make sure each RAM stick is seated (snapped in) properly.

Second, it is highly recommended that you use identical (8 GB) RAM sticks: same brand and same part number. Also, make sure your RAM is DDR3 or DDR3L, Unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM), and NON-ECC.  Again, all four RAM modules should be identical. Don't mix.

Thirdly, and we're talking best-case scenario now, the five beeps you referenced could simply indicate a dirty RAM stick or sticks that requires a gentle cleaning and reseating.  As a matter of fact, I would take the time to fit one RAM stick at the time and restart your desktop each time in order to isolate a possible faulty module.

In any regard, examples of compatible quality 8 GB RAM for your HP EliteDesk G1 800 SFF are:

Samsung 8 GB DDR3, PC3-12800, 1600 MHz, Unbuffered DIMM, CL=11, NON-ECC, 240-pin, 1.50V, p/n: M378B1G73QH0-CK0

Crucial 8 GB DDR3L, PC3-12800, 1600 MHz, UDIMM, CL=11, NON-ECC, 240-pin, 1.35V, p/n: CT102464BD160B

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Hi Promethee,

They're all used modules.

1x Crucial

1x Corsair and

2x Kingston modules.

I did as you suggested and tested each module one at a time in each slot and found it's both the Kingston modules that are the issue.  They're designated 12800E and I don't know if that is significant, but I have the Corsair and Crucial running in conjunction with 2x 4GB G.Skill modules giving me 24GB for now.

The Kingstons are under warranty despite being used, so I can take them back and exchange them.

Thanks for your help. I've learned something today.
