Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am exchanging a failing Hard Drive for an SSD on an HP Pavilion 510 Desktop PC. No matter what I do, the BIOS will not recognize the SSD! When I try to boot to install a new OS, my system hangs at the info screen showing the cpu, ram, etc., and I can't do anything! I even upgraded the BIOS to the latest version. I have changed settings in the BIOS, enabled and disabled legacy booting, tried everything I can think of, and still cannot get the system to boot. I can put any other hard drive on the connectors, and the system works fine. I have tried (2) SSD drives now, and have the same problem with both. Is there a compatibility issue I don't know about?

@Jim6715 , welcome to the Community.

Here is a HP Knowledge Base article that should help you complete the upgrade.

What is the Product Number of the computer? I need this information to review the specifications of it. Please don't furnish the Serial # or other personal information. You can find the Product Number at the bottom of the page when you open HP Support Assistant.

Hello!

The product # V8N85AA#ABA. It is an HP Pavilion 510-p017C DT PC US. Here's some more info....I can't get into the BIOS when the SSD is connected.....the system freezes. If I remove it, and boot the system, I can get into the BIOS. If I connect ANY other rotational hard drive, I can boot, get into the BIOS, and see the HD in the storage area of the BIOS.

I am trying to use a VisionTek 500GB SSD. I have tried 2 of them, and got the same result. I have not tried, and do not have an SSD from another manufacturer to see if that makes a difference. I have just never seen this type of issue with a PC before. I appreciate your input!

Thank you for the additional information, @Jim6715!

I have always used Samsung SSD's because that seem to work best with the HP BIOS/UEFI.  They also have their own Data Migration software that clones the HDD to the SSD.  You install the Data Migration software on the HDD and select the SSD as the target drive and it clones the drive with no problems.  I have done this numerous times in the past several years.

I suggest that you buy a USB to SSD adapter to connect the SSD to your computer.  I use one of these adapters to connect my SSD's to my computer and boot from the SSD drive.  They work great.

Hello! I’m trying to update my HP All in one 24 e200nl substituting the original 1 TB HDD with a Crucial 500 gb SSD. I supposed it was an easy task, but actually it isn’t at all. I started, naively enought, reducing the partition size of the OS Windows 10 to 450 gb, given that I’m using no more than 100 gb. Then, using Acronis, I cloned the partition to the SSD connected with an USB to SATA cable. Then I spent a copule of days just to find the way to open this weird case! BTW I didn’t find any video on YouTube that showed how to open it. Anyway, after a thought fight, I got it. then I changed the disk, closed the case and restarted the pc. Too bad it hung up at the info screen! After some head scarpinig, I argued that probably the problem was in the different size of the HDD (1 TB) compared to the 500 gb Crucial.
Then I REopened the weird case, and reinstalled the original HDD. Then I created a recovery USB and veryfied it was functioning. Then, for the third  time, I opened the case and placed the SSD. Reboot and…hung up again at the same info screen!

Can anybody help?
