Removed hard drives from 2007 HP lap top and 2010 HP Desktop to transfer files to new HP Desktop and ASUS laptop. Used Sabrent connector cable. Get messages that both old drives are corrupt and to format. Unable to find how to format.

Windows drive utilities are unable to deal with format issues and will nearly always say a drive is corrupt or unformatted -- even when it is NOT.
Your thread header says you want to transfer data from the old drive -- and to do that, you need to use special applications.
1) Download and install this utility on a working PC http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...
2) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive.
If that tool does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Another issue might be the adapter. In my search for efficient ways to transfer from drive to drive, I have experimented with many different adapters. A few were not always reliable. I have found these SATA enclosure / adapter to be excellent.Sabrent EC-DFFN, and the Vantec NexStar CB-ST00U3
BTW<> a non-powered adapter will be problematic with a 3.5" drive.
