OMEN 30L Desktop PC GT13-1000a (207P7AV)

Hi, I tried swapping out CPUs from a Ryzen 5 5600g to Ryzen 7 5800x with no luck.  The CPU fan would run loud and fast and eventually the computer would power off.  An error popped up to visit www.hp.com/go/90Xfanerror  This was of no help.

Would a newer, more powerful cpu fan solve the problem?  Has anyone had luck upgrading to a 105w cpu on a Hana 8876 motherboard?  If so, how did you do it?

Thank you.

Hi @tajstajshop

The PC should POST if you did the processor upgrade correctly, the 5800X is supported. Check your work.

The MB might need a BIOS update to modify fan curves or other parameters when running a 5800X.

The latest BIOS for the 8876 MB at this Site might help. There is a fan fix in the "Fixes" section.

You might want to look at upgrading the CPU cooling system. This YouTuber installed a Corsair H60 in a 25L case.

Thank you Bill_To, thank you, I really appreciate your feedback.  I did get the pc to boot with the ryzen 7 5800x but I had to work fast because of the cpu fan error message...it did power off a couple of times.  Also, for some reason I had to input the bitlocker key both in the upgrade attempt and when I went back to the original cpu.  My HP support assistant states my bios is up to date (Version F.18) for my motherboard.  Your link states the Version F.12 Rev.A was released in November 16th 2021.  Should I revert and install this earlier version?  Would the data (fixes) in the earlier versions not carry forward to more recent versions ?

In regards to the cpu fan and heatsink, I am using what came installed in the machine.  Maybe the only way to do this sort of upgrade (going from 65 watt cpu to a 105 watt cpu)  is with a water cooler cpu fan.  The motherboard specs state that the motherboard will take/support the upgrade with no mention of further fan upgrade...

Maybe I should let a professional attemp this?

Hi @tajstajshop

My pleasure.

I would disable BitLocker in Control Pane, Device Encryption. Or back up the BitLocker key if you want BitLocker. I don't use BitLocker on W11 Pro. BitLocker can potentially cause more harm than good.

Have seen users get locked out of Windows even when they have the BitLocker key.

I could only Find BIOS version F.12 at your PC's driver download site.

The F.18 BIOS would have the F.12 fixes. No need to roll back the BIOS. And, it is very difficult to roll back BIOS versions with HP MBs.

I would try a local PC Tech if you want to do a liquid cooled CPU option. I don't know what is going on with the factory fan. But I would guess the factory fan/heatsink will struggle with a 5800X.

Hi Bill_To, I was thinking and I am on an Insiders Build on Windows Update on this particular Omen 30L.  I wonder if this could have anything to do with the CPU swap?

I did manage to disable the bitlocker but HP says you still may need it if you swap out parts like memory or SSD...which is crazy because I have added memory, cloned the SSD drive and installed the new one it without issue....

Hi @tajstajshop

I was a Windows Insider back in 2015 before W10 shipped. Never had a problem upgrading components so I would not know if this is the problem. It shouldn't be.

I have been using Windows Pro versions on Desktop PCs since Windows XP. Never used BitLocker.

You could get locked out of the encrypted drive if you lose or forget the BitLocker recovery key. I have also seen some folks lose drive access while having the correct BitLocker recovery key.

The drive becomes a paperweight if you don't have the recovery key, or BitLocker fails, or the MB TPM gets corrupted.
