HP Envy Desktop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a HP Envy Desktop (model no. 750-170se) that I bought from Costco few years back. The hard drive makes lot of noise at times and the system gets really slow or struck at times. It currently has a 2000 GB Seagate HDD installed with model code ST2000DM001 (connected to terminal labelled P3). Another similar terminal P4 is free. I want to know if I can add another HDD or preferrably a solid state drive to it or not? If yes can anyone suggest which one to get and how to hook it up? If not, then I would like to change the current HDD. Can someone recommend me Western Dilital Counterpart with 2000 GB capacity or preferrably higher capacity. Also, in that case how to transfer operating system and data transferred to new HDD in that case (as I did not get the OS DVD; the OS is on the same drive in a separate partition).

Thanks in advance!

NVMe m.2 PCIe SSD should work.

Your computer supports another Hard Drive as well. Refer to this document for instructions - Replacing or Adding a Hard Drive for HP ENVY 700 Desktop Series PCs

If you'd like to replace the current Hard Drive with a bigger one, you may opt for - 3TB, WD GP1000A, 6Gbs, 512e. It is from Western Digital and the Part# is 838143-001.

You may install the Win 10 using the Media Creation Tool

Contact HP Support in your region for more details.

So if I want to add a second drive what is the maximum size I can go with? Also can I get SSD as well? What if I eant to use SSD for opertaing system and use the xurrent hard disk for data? Do I need ro make any changes to make disks master or slave?

Sorry I missed first line. So for PCIe SSD , I will need to have a PCI slot free which is not the case as there is a video card in that slot.

You have an M.2 socket 3, key M on the motherboard which supports PCIe x4 / SATA interface.

Here's the specifications of the motherboard installed - https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05369438

Expand the "Expansion Slot" option.

Thanks!
So for M.2 socket 3 PCIe x4 what are the supported form factors (e.g. 2242, 2260, 2280, etc.) ?

@drsa23

The M.2 Socket 3, with M Key, supports type 2260/2280. It supports drives that are 22mm wide and either 60mm or 80mm long with a M key.

Thanks!

I have a connector labelled P4 free, is it a power connector for 3.5/2.5 inch form factor HDD/SSD power connector? I am inclied on adding a 2.5 inch SSD, and for that I remember seeing white and blue SATA slots on motherboard. DO colors signify something?

Additionally, please let me know where can I access the manual and labelled pictures for the motherboard included in this PC?
