The Xeon E3-12xx v3 family is compatible, at least from the Xeon E3-1220 v3 to the Xeon E3-1280 v3 as based on: UserBenchmark: HP ProDesk 400 G1 MT Compatible Components.

In addition, this bad boy is also compatible with your HP ProDesk 400 G1 MT: the legendary "Devil's Canyon" i7-4790K.

If you go with said processor, you want to improve the airflow through your case.
