Greetings @Bunta3209

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I can't find any HP 2B36 MB specs.

You're running a 4790 now at a TDP of 84 watts.

This might be the best CPU or maybe the MB can do a 4790K.

The 4790K would give about a 400 MHz: base and turbo frequency boost if your MB supports 88 watt TDP CPUs.

One would think your MB VRMs and BIOS can spare an additional 4 watts. But doing 88 watts is a guess without HP MB specs to verify.

Hi, @Bunta3209

Below is the link to the parts list for your PC:

HP PartSurfer

It comes with the HP 'Kaili2' motherboard.

You have the best processor HP offered in the model series according to HP.

You can view the motherboard specs for this model PC which has the same motherboard as yours.

This related discussion indicates you might be able to upgrade to the i7-4790K, but it is for a different model motherboard.

This person installed one in a PC with the Kaili (not Kaili2) motherboard and it didn't work.

Not worth taking the risk of it not working, IMHO.

@Bunta3209,

Not to be a party-pooper, but the specs our Senior Expert @Paul_Tikkanen provided shows that an HP ENVY Phoenix 850-004ns as fitted with the Kaili2 motherboard got an Intel Core i5-4690K installed, which sports an 88-watt TDP, which, as a matter of fact, is the same as an i7-4790K: ergo, an i7-4790K is compatible, and in my opinion why not upgrade to this legendary processor, nicknamed the Devil's Canyon.

[EDIT:] Yes, in theory, the hyperthreading on the i7-4790K may drive up the power consumption as it is doing more work than an i5-4690K, but in practice that is not always the case.  In any regards, unless you plan to really stress out an i7-4790K (which few users would do -or even know how to do), high i7-4790K thermals are almost certainly not going to be an issue for you.

And in case you wonder why I assert this with some confidence: well, one of my upgrade projects happened to be an HP EliteDesk 800 G1 TWR, which I fitted with the Devil's Canyon: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-an-HP-EliteDesk-800-G..., and -you guessed it, even whilst using it for gaming for a while, it did never overheat or cause other undesirable issues.

Kind Regards,
