Hi, I have a Z240 SFF desktop that currently has no HD or SSD installed, and I want to add an SSD to the M.2 slot.

I would like to know what type this board supports- the “M” keyed, or “B” keyed? My understanding is that the “M” key is the newer NVME spec, and the “B” key is the older SATA spec.

I tried googling the answer, but results were unclear, so I thought I’d ask you peeps!

I was considering getting a Western Digital Black SN750 or SN850 256 or 500GB drive, depending on available deals. Or, maybe something better if you have any recommendations.

please advise, I really don’t want to buy something that won’t function in this PC.
Thanks! 😃

Hi:

The Crucial memory/SSD report for your PC indicates the M.2 slot supports NVMe SSD's

HP - Compaq HP Z240 Workstation | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

The PCIe slot is only Gen 3.0, so a Gen 4.0 SSD will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds.

This chart provides the theoretical maximum transfer speeds the various PCIe generations support:

PCIe Speeds and Limitations | Crucial.com

The system board illustration in chapter 1, page 5 of the service manual indicates the M.2 slot is PCIe 3 x 4.

PCIe = NVMe.

Thanks for the reply and info.

I will use this to help decide what to buy.

You're very welcome.

Oh, one more question- is the external heat sink necessary to run an m.2 SSD in this model? (Z240 SFF)

HP Recommended

It shouldn't be  necessary, but it wouldn't hurt to buy one that includes a heat sink.
