HP EliteDesk 800 65W G2 Desktop Mini PC
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP EliteDesk 800 G2 has startup problems;

As soon as I power up the PC it tries to start up before I have touched the power button. The first boot fails and it tries to boot repeatedly and when I am able to press F10 it claims that the battery needs replacing as there is a difference between the BIOS date/time .

I have put put two brand new Duracell batteries into it but makes no difference. Before I recover the SSD,  processor, memory etc. I would welcome any suggestions as to whether my computer can be fixed.

Thanks in advance.

Hello CornishNige,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Troubleshooting Startup Issues on HP EliteDesk 800 G2

It sounds like your HP EliteDesk 800 G2 is experiencing issues related to the power-on procedure and BIOS settings retaining date and time, which could be influenced by the RTC (Real-Time Clock) battery functionality. Since you have already tried replacing the battery without success, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure Proper Battery Insertion: Double-check that the new batteries are correctly installed in the battery socket without any gaps, and that the contacts are clean and free of debris.

  2. Check BIOS Settings: Access the BIOS Setup Utility by pressing F10 on startup to ensure that all settings, including the date and time, are saved properly. Once adjustments are made, remember to save and exit the BIOS.

  3. BIOS Update: Sometimes, updating the BIOS to the latest version can resolve unexpected startup behaviors. Ensure that you download the correct BIOS update for your model from HP's support site.

  4. Clear CMOS: Perform a CMOS reset by temporarily removing the battery and using the CMOS jumper on the motherboard to clear the settings. This might help in resolving mismatched date and time at startup.

  5. Inspect Power Settings: Verify if the power settings configured either in BIOS or Windows are not causing the PC to automatically startup. Look for settings related to wake-on features or scheduled tasks that might inadvertently trigger power-up.

  6. Check for Loose Connections: Ensure that all internal components such as memory, SSD, and cables are securely connected. Sometimes, reseating these components can resolve boot issues.

  7. Inspect Hardware: If issues persist, consider examining the power supply and motherboard for any visible signs of damage or malfunction.

  8. Run Diagnostics: Use HP's built-in diagnostics tools to perform a hardware test to identify issues. This can typically be accessed during the boot process via the Escape key or an F2 function option.
