HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-3000i (4M0K0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My Pavillion Desktop PC TP01-3000i is shutting off during the night.  There are no sleep options turned on.  It is on a power backup system that is not showing any issues with incoming AC Power.  I just cannot figure out what is causing this.  Do I need a new power supply, is the cooling fan working ok.  Is there a way to debug this issue?

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi @drcsue,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Experiencing unexpected shutdowns with your desktop PC can indeed be frustrating. There are several potential causes for this issue, and troubleshooting steps can help pinpoint the root cause. Here's a systematic approach you can take.

  • Check Power Supply: A failing power supply could cause the computer to shut down unexpectedly. However, since your PC is connected to a power backup system, it's less likely to be the culprit. Still, it's worth checking if the power supply is functioning correctly.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Overheating can cause a computer to shut down to prevent damage. Check if the cooling fans are working properly and if there's any dust buildup blocking airflow. You can use software tools to monitor the temperature of your CPU and other components.
  • Event Viewer: Check the Windows Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings that might indicate the cause of the shutdown. Look for critical errors or warnings around the time of the shutdown.
  • Power Settings: Even if you've confirmed that sleep options are turned off, double-check all power settings to ensure there's nothing configured to cause the computer to shut down automatically.
  • Hardware Diagnostics: Most PCs come with built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware issues. You can usually access these tools by pressing a specific key during startup (often F2, F10, or Del). Run a thorough diagnostic test to check for any hardware failures.
  • Software Updates: Make sure all your drivers and operating system are up to date. Sometimes, outdated software can cause compatibility issues that lead to unexpected shutdowns.
  • Power Management Settings in BIOS/UEFI: Sometimes, power management settings in the BIOS/UEFI firmware can cause unexpected shutdowns. Check these settings and adjust them if necessary.
  • Hardware Inspection: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it might be worth physically inspecting the hardware components for any signs of damage or loose connections. Pay particular attention to the motherboard, RAM, and CPU.
  • Power Strip/Backup System: Although you mentioned the power backup system isn't showing issues, it's still worth trying to connect the PC directly to a wall outlet to rule out any potential issues with the power strip or backup system.

By systematically checking each potential cause, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue causing your PC to shut down unexpectedly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
