Hi there,
I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the CPU cooler without removing the backplate from the motherboard. Is this possible? The cooler which I'm wanting to install is Noctua Low profile NH-L9. https://noctua.at/en/nh-l9i
The motherboard that I'm installing it on is the ms 7826 https://support.hp.com/ph-en/document/c03748942
Thanks
Rufus

First of all, the Noctua heat sink is probably not the best CPU cooler for your processor, which has an 84-watt TDP, and I quote: "While it provides first-rate performance in its class, it is not suitable for overclocking and or CPUs that create high heat loads."
And guess what: an 84-watt TDP processor (or 88-watt, if you got an i5-4690K or i7-4790K) would be considered a "high heat load" CPU.
Secondly, I don't see that this heat sink comes with a mounting backplate, spacers, and/or fasteners, which are almost certainly needed for your motherboard.
I would suggest an OEM HP 95-watt rated heat sink for your LGA 1150 heatsink, such as this heat sink example, with p/n: 712960-001 (625257-001), which you can purchase inexpensively online, such as via this trusted eBay-UK Seller: HP EliteDesk 800 G1 8200 8300 6200 Z220 CPU Cooling Fan + Heatsink 712960-001 | eBay.
Unless you already got one of these, in that case I would suggest adding additional cooling fan(s) in your chassis to improve the airflow inside your case.
Kind Regards,
