D Drive not recognised in explorer or in computer management. It was working then stopped.

I noticed that when I was looking for my pictures on explorer that my D drive had disappeared.I then looked at computer management to see what it showed for the drives. It says 'Unknown and not initialised' It has been working since bought and just seems that I cannot see it. When I look at device manager it is there and says it is working normally yet there is no other information provided like for the other drives.

Any suggestions how I can get it back?

I have 6 drives in my Desktop , (mix of m.3, SSD 2.5 and HDD 8TB.) and even  MAPPED drive to my server.

first off what is "D:" drive.?

and where is it? (inside PC or outside)

and where  is it plugged into, I have external 6TB on USB-C doc,

Desktops do that, easy, lots and lots of drives.  M.2 drive or SATA port drive inside?

is this and external USB port drive? or ESTAT port? external.

on my PC "D:" Blueray DRIVE< ODD.

in explorer

right click the drive D; pick properties, click TAB tools , then clean,  do that first, if a HDD. (not CD/odd)

if "D:" drive is USB drive,  always do the , task bar USB icon Eject before removing drive or turning off PC and for sure before tripping on the AC line cord. oops. data lost ! (then alter tune off WRITE CACHING) google that.

My computer has a SSD C drive (Samsung 118GB), an internal WDC drive of 8GB DDR and an optical drive. It is the WDC drive that I cannot see at all now. I cannot right click the driver as it does not appear anywhere except in the system information.

 internal WDC drive of 8GB DDR and an optical drive. It is the WDC drive that I cannot see at all now.

So 😧 does not show up in explorer or disk manager? or device manager (system information is useless here)

OK it is INTERNAL, and is 2.5" or 3.5 " drive it is not DDR, that be a RAM disk (I have one too)

the drive is bad if the power cable or data cable is not loose or fell off the WDC.

so run this, app, free and safe.

i bet it fails.

in fact run in on all drives, say every 6 months if hdd  5years old run it every week unless data loss is fun.

HDD love to fail at 5 years, (national averages vast)  we run smart test on them all with out fail.

but needs a working drive letter, if the hDD is dead and motor can not be heard to spin (ear to case) then the DRIVE IS DEAD.

OTHER BASE LINE TESTS.

drive does not show up in BIOS.  if yes fails here, that means it is dead, this is base line PnP test in BIOS

if yes, I open my tool box ,whip out  my trusty stethoscope $5 and turn PC on and listen to the drive,.

motor dead is dead HDD.  it must be heard to spin up!!  (yes i have seen vast fail here)

AC cord pulled, I re-seat both cables.

repeat above  for BIOS and heard.

still dead?

Do the PC hard cold reset next AC power gone no AC cord present

the push power button 3 times until no LED blink and not fans twitch

now  wait 1/2hr. (caps fully discharging now) a goal .

then put AC cord back and test it all.

all devices in all PCs made can in fact latch up. (ESD , and more reasons)  so we do the cold reset.

If bios does like the HDD that does not mean it is good. only that the BIOS pnp can see the HDD ID command answers.

if yes, BIOS happy ,we run smart test on the offending drive.

no matter what PC, 

if no drive letter shows up in the 3 pages of w10 , please say so.

HP has diagnostic apps but varies by year PC made

Thank you all for the replies. I cannot see the drive at all so I cannot run any checks. In fact I now get a blue message saying 3F1 fail and press F2 but the computer will not do anything. I am therefore taking to a specialist to see what is going on.

My D drive had paked up and my C drive (SSD) had been affected. Decided to upgrade SSD to 500gb version and it all now works great. Good work by my local PC specialist. Very pleased.
