Does the Pro Tower 400 G9 PCI take DDR4 or DDR5 RAM? I can't find a definitive answer in any documentation. I see both mentioned, and some sources suggest that it depends on the processor. I'm looking at a i7-13700, which seems to take DDR5-5600, whereas some other processors seem to be associated with DDR4. I don't want to have to buy the machine and take it apart just to see what type of memory it uses. I have to look at upgrades and pricing first, as apparently pre-built configurations only go up to 32GB, and I want 64GB.

@mxsmanic,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

That would be DDR4 RAM: your PC can accept up to 2x32GB of DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz, Non-ECC, UDIMM, 288-pin RAM sticks: HP HP Pro 400 G9 Tower | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial EU.

Why does the product documentation mention both DDR4 and DDR5? Also, memory finders like the one on the Kingston site mention both DDR4 and DDR5, based on the processor model.

Hi @mxsmanic

requires selected i5, i7 or i9 CPUs for DDR5, if your model uses DDR4. you cannot use DDR5. not compatible with BIOS

@mxsmanic,

Actually, I just found out that the HP Pro Tower 400 G9 was issued with three different motherboards:

1.) With SSID: 8953 (12th gen Intel Core: DDR4 RAM)

2.) With SSID: 8AC7 (13th gen Intel Core: DDR4 RAM)

3.) With SSID: 8C59 (14th gen Intel Core: DDR5 RAM)

You can figure out what RAM your PC needs, by looking in System Information, and to the right of "BaseBoard Product".

Thanks! The SKU of the machine I'm considering is 6U4Y2EA#ABF. Is there any way to find out which motherboard it has without actually buying it? The HP site is fiendishly complicated and not very informative. How many different "Pro Tower 400 G9 PCI" PCs can there be?

@mxsmanic,

Yes, I can: according to HP PartSurfer, this model is fitted with a 13th gen Intel Core processor (i7-13700) and also specifically mentions that this PC is fitted with DDR4 RAM.
