Hi

Here is my problem. I recently purchased from HP.com a Pavilion Desktop TP01-2165z windows 11 computer with DVD writer built in. I tried playing a standard DVD. It wouldn't automatically play. I tried a few and none would work. I tried to download software. Nothing happened. It won't load. I called HP and spoke with someone who connected to my computer and tried to resolve the problem.  They had access to my computer. After several hours I was told the DVD writer doesn't play DVDs. I was told it is lacking something and someone at HP tech would be able to download software that would allow the DVD to play but I would have to pay for that service.

This is ridiculous. Every computer I ever owned had a DVD writer that would automatically load and play DVDs, CDs and allowed me to download software. I need  to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.

Thanks

Hi:

I'm surprised that HP no longer includes software to play and burn DVDs and burn CD's anymore.

HP used to include software for playing and burning DVDs on the PC's support pages.

I guess they don't want to pay vendors like Roxio and Cyberlink to bundle basic software on HP PC's.

DVD playing software is now essential because Microsoft no longer includes the built in DVD playing software that used to come with Windows 7 because they no longer wanted to pay the fees to the DVD codec owners to include the software in Windows.

You should be able to use the free VLC media player from the Microsoft Store to play DVD's.

That's what I use on my PC's that don't have HP-included software.

VLC - Download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

Thanks Paul.

You clarified the DVD issue for me. I will check out the VLC Media Player from the Microsoft store.

Just one more problem. When I had my old computer I purchased two software programs from Best Buy or another store.  Cyberlink Power Director 16 and  Adobe Photoshop Elements 2020.

Since the DVD player won't automatically load I am not able to install the software.  I see a check mark next to Auto-load in my computer. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again Paul.

You're very welcome, Steve.

When you insert either one of the programs in the DVD drive, can you open the drive in Windows explorer and click on the setup application to run the program to install it?

I've had to do that a couple of times when I install a program disk in the drive and it reads it but doesn't start automatically running the program.
