HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0024

I recently upgraded the CPU on my PC from a Ryzen 5 2400 to a Ryzen 7 2700. I verified with my computers specs that the CPU is compatible with my system. In addition, I have also previously upgraded my GPU to the RTX 3060 and my RAM to 32GB DDR4 2933. I’ve had no issues with those upgrades.

But now with the new CPU, my computer will boot up but the display stays blank. I previously upgraded my BIOS to the latest version and it worked with my old CPU. I tried resolving the issue by removing the CMOS battery for about 10 minutes, but that didn’t work. Does anyone have any advice on what might be going wrong?

Hi @Egraybeal

I would guess the 2700 is faulty. You purchased a 2700 and did not buy a 2700X, is this correct? Your MB does not support a 2700x.

There have been some CPU memory controller issues on 2000 series and 3000 series Ryzen processors.

Try one stick of memory in each memory slot with the 2700 installed. Also try one stick of factory memory in each memory slot. Rotate through all available memory modules and memory slots to verify the CPU memory controller issue.

The PC may POST using the 2700 and one stick of memory in one of the memory slots.

Hopefully you can return the CPU to the retailer for an exchange or refund.

Hi @Egraybeal

You have a HP 690-0024 product.

Don't do any HP or Windows Update BIOS updates or firmware updates.

Check this Link for details.

Correct, I bought a 2700, not a 2700x.

I tried rotating through the memory slots like you suggested, but that did not work. Do you think it could be an issue with the PSU? I'm using the stock 400W, maybe with the upgraded RAM, GPU and CPU it needs an upgraded PSU to keep up?

Hi @Egraybeal

Good call!

I didn't check your PC's specs. Missed the power supply variable.

Nvidia recommends a 550 watt power supply and one PCIe eight pin connection.

Now you have a different problem. You have a proprietary MB and power supply. You can't use a retail PSU.

HP only provides a maximum 500 watt PSU, part number L05757-800 Power Supply - GNRC PSU 500W ENT17 FR GLD upgrade. This part has the required PCIe 8 pin connector. You can't buy this part from HP at this time. Check this Link to verify.

Amazon or eBay sells this part. The 500 watt PSU may help. This HP 500 watt PSU may work until the CPU and GPU cumulative power draw, in addition to other components, exceeds the HP PSU 500 watt limit.

It is interesting you can use the 3060 and the new RAM with the factory CPU. The 2700 must be drawing more watts as compared to the factory CPU.

You cannot exclude the possibility that you may have purchased a faulty 2700.
