I need advice. My optical drive doesn't read any type of disc's at all. Makes a buzzing sound when I put in a disc, never loads. Tried several troubleshooting steps from the Net. Checked to make sure drive was recognized in BIOS, Device Manager, & File Explorer, which it is. Properties menu of drive says, "Device is working properly". Checked cables connected to drive, which is okay. Uninstalled/reinstalled drive and driver, didn't have any affect. Even tried drive in Safe Mode, same result. I don't know what else to try. Is there anything else that I can try or should I look for a replacement? PC is HP 590-p0054. Thanks.

I do thank you for all the suggestions. Many of which I have tried without success. So, I will be searching for a replacement drive. I'm seriously considering an external USB CD/DVD drive. I'm sure it would come in handy to use with my new laptop that as you know doesn't have one. Thanks again for your help!!!

Hi @jeobsplyr,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your concern!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your optical drive is recognized but makes a buzzing sound and doesn't read discs, you might need to consider replacing the drive. Before making a replacement, follow these troubleshooting steps to ensure the issue isn't resolvable through simpler methods.
Check Device Status in Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
- Locate the DVD/CD-ROM drives section and find your optical drive.
- Ensure it says "This device is working properly". If not, follow the on-screen instructions to troubleshoot.
Update or Roll Back Drivers:
- Right-click on the optical drive in Device Manager and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Alternatively, if recent updates may have caused the issue, select Roll Back Driver to revert to a previous version.
Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter:
- Open Control Panel and navigate to Troubleshooting.
- Select View all on the left sidebar and then click Hardware and Devices.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooter.
Clean the Optical Drive Lens:
- Purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning disc and use it to clean the lens inside the optical drive.
Check Disc Compatibility and Condition:
- Ensure the discs you are trying to read are not damaged or scratched.
- Try using different types of discs (CD, DVD, etc.) to see if the drive reads any of them.
If none of the troubleshooting steps resolves the issue, your optical drive may be faulty and require replacement.
I hope this helps.
