I want to replace my 1 TB HDD with a new 1TB NVME drive but I don't know if the pc has a thermal pad already inside the SSD cover, if I need to buy one separately, or if I need one at all.

Hi

I have used M.2 SSDs without thermal pads or heatsinks and have had no issues.

You could see thermal throttling if you routinely do large, sustained, data transfers.

M.2 drives usually throttle at around 70 C. 50 C or lower is usually recommended.

Many M.2 SSD manufacturers provide diagnostics and benchmark software to check temps and performance.
