HP Pavilion 550-153wb
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone, quick question from a noob. A while back, I bought the HP Pavilion 550-153wb from a friend, basically like new. Since then I've added a GPU and more RAM, and am now looking to upgrade to a new CPU. My current CPU is an i3-4170, and I just purchased an i7 4790. This PC has a Memphis 2-S mobo I believe, and from what I see online this new CPU should match the socket. Upon looking at youtube videos on how to replace the CPU, it said that I may have to update my bios to get the new CPU to run correctly and that is something I am not confident in really doing and really don't want to mess this PC up. Does anyone know if I will have to do that, or if this will just be a "plug and play" scenario, or where I could go to find this information? Thanks in advance!

-Brian

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

HP shows support for the i7-4790.

The CPU upgrade should work without a BIOS update.

A BIOS update is available at this (Link) if you need it. This BIOS update is a security update.

Hi Bkirby2117,

You're very welcome.

The CPU upgrade should be good to go.
