Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

a friend of mine has an unusual problem. First, the operating system is up to date as well as the Bios. The problem has appeared recently. Whenever he selects shut down from Windows 10, the computer shuts down but it restarts automatically. The computer is a Pavilion 500-249. I know it is old but until recently, it was working just fine. I am curious to see if someone has ever experienced something like this and if a solution was indentified.

Regards

Something is keeping it from shutting down. Typically an application or service that is running and does not want to be shut down.

Usually the display will show the name of the app and ask if it is OK to force it to close.  Rarely it can happen that the display driver shuts down before the problem app can show the warning.   The system then reboots.

Look in the event viewer under system and applications for a message such as " xxx vetoed the shutdown.   " or any critical message that correlates to the shutdown time.

It could also be a hardware problem in the motherboard or even a stuck power on button.

It is possible the "windows shutdown" is configured to sleep instead of powering off.  if the mouse is moved or keyboard touched it can wake up.  Some devices plugged into the USB may refuse the sleep command.  This will show up in the event viewer as a "veto" and the system will turn back on.

Thanks BemerBiker for your reply.

Regarding the power button, it seems to work normally. For instance, if I press and hold it, the computer will shutdown. If Windows is up and running and I press the button, it will trigger a shutdown. but it will restart by itself.

I did not find any message similar to "xxx vetoed the shutdown". Moreover, I went to Windows journals, system group and used the filter option to retrieve41, 1074, 6006 and 6008 entries. Nothing special came out.

I went to the power set of options in Windows parameters and everything was normal.

When I shut down Windows 10 it looks like a normal shutdown including the power button on the computer case turning off but shortly after, it turns on by itself. It looks to me like a hardware problem.

Thanks again Beemer.

Hi Beemer,

I have checked the fast startup option and it was already off. I have turned it on for a test and it was not conclusive. So I put it back to off. Regarding the second option presented in the Microsoft Forum. to update the chipset, there is no chipset package for this computer running under Windows 10. However, there was an Intel management engine interface. I have tried to install it but it generated an error saying that it was not compatible with this platform.

Thanks again for your support.
