I bought a used M.2 SATA  ssd (B+M key) to upgrade some of my storage.  Unfortunately the drive fits fine into the M key'd  M.2 slot in my machines but is not recognized by either Win 11 or the BIOS in either machines.

The BIOS is on the latest versions in both machines.  Is there some driver update or bios setting that needs to be configured?

I know the service manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06063157.pdf, says on p.24 you can refer to the page 3 for the "list of available solid state drives".  However I read this as just the list of possible options to purchase the unit originally with.  For example, only TLC drives are listed.  But SURELY QLC and other variations, newer specs can be installed and run fine in the system.

In other documents from HP for the 600 G3 / 800 G4 DM, it just states that the M.2 slots are for "storage" (as opposed to WLAN).  There's no explicit mention anywhere I can find from official HP responses or documents yet that confirms if M.2 SATA drives will work or is not supported.

Can someone point me to an official from HP answer?

PS so far only answers I've seen base answer from the list of "available options".  Which is a unclear imo and maybe wrong.

You're very welcome.

If M.2 SATA SSD's were supported, they would have been listed as an option along with the NVMe SSD's.

The drives are plug and play.

If a SATA M.2 SSD was supported, it would have shown up in the BIOS and you would have been able to either install Windows on it or initialize the disk in the Windows disk management app if it was new.

There are some M.2 slots that support SATA SSD's only, some support both SATA and NVMe SSD's, and some support NVMe SSD's only such as in the two models you referenced.

I believe that if you wanted to install a 2 TB NVMe SSD it should work.

Crucial offers 2 TB NVMe SSD's for sale in the 600 G3 model series for example.

HP just didn't offer those in the model series.

Hi:

This is a peer-to-peer forum.  We don't work for or represent HP.

I posted the specs sheet for the Prodesk 600 DM/800 G4 DM, and SATA M.2 SSD's are not supported, only NVMe.

For SATA drives, only 2.5" SATA drives are supported.

Hi, thanks for clarifying that this is a peer forum.  I do appreciate the links to official docs - wish HP were more clear on this.

Can I ask where in those docs it says that M.2 SATA drives are not supported?  I can only find:

"(2) M.2 PCIe x4 2280/2230 combo (for storage)" - under the Ports/slots/bays section.  For storage - great so that means M2. SATA should be supported as it's for "storage"?  At least that's how my optimistic self wanted to read it 🙂

And under the Storage section a list of available options (which only only note TLC based drives mostly).  As mentioned, does this mean that NO QLC based drives are supported?  Or no 2 TB NVME drives are supported?  Just b/c they are not on the list of available options originally?  That doesn't make sense to me.

Let me know if, I've missed something.

Fair enough.

Thank you for being patient with my disgruntled stubborness.

HP if you are listening, please be more clear in the future...  I would'nt have wasted the money on the drive.
