I have a HP Z6 G4

Ram question before I upgrade.  Will my current dual Xeon 6136 even post if I put in 6 sticks of DDR4 2933 ram.  I know if it does, I will only see 2666.

The reason I ask is I am also looking to upgrade to two 62xx Xeons in the future and I see that 2933 is used on CL 62xx but a No on SL 61xx.  But if it wont even boot and be usable then I will skip the upgrade.

The ram in question is MTA36ASF4G72PZ-2G9J3 or HMA84GR7JJR4N-WM

Thank you for your time.

Hi @PC_Lifecycle

It can never go to a higher frequency than the processor supports, it will only go to DDR4-2666. It does not exist

Resistencia,

Thank you for the quick response  : )

I understand I will only get 2666. The question is, can I use DDR4 2933 with the 61xx and get 2666 speed. Or it will not even post?  I know some Xeons are very touchy when it comes to ram and wont even get past post or be usable.

Thank you.

Yes, it can work normally when the memory frequency is higher than the JEDEC that has the frequency 2666 is activated and the CLs go down, this should happen in any memory that uses the latest standards.
