HP EliteDesk 705 G3 Small Form Factor PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I checked the hardware reference guide for this PC and it's showing that it's compatible with up to 64GB of memory. I bought 4 16GB sticks to try and upgrade with.

They are G.Skill Aegis  F4-2133C15S-16GIS and are DDR4 2133 with 15-15-15 timing as specified on the hardware reference guide. I updated the BIOS to the current P06 ver 02.38.

With 1 stick it shows 16GB as it should. All 4 work individually this way, so there's nothing wrong with them.

With 2, inserted in slots 1 and 3, it shows only 16.1GB (16448MB according to the BIOS)

With all 4 inserted the system will not even POST.

I tried them in another identical Elitedesk 705 G3 SFF and get the same results, so I doubt it's an issue with the slot. These RAM modules were also recommended by Newegg's memory finder for this specific PC. What do I have to do to get all 4 working at the same time?

@howdyhamster,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Maybe this has nothing to do with your problem, but it worked for me once.  Takes just a couple of seconds to check, what do you have to lose?

Type msconfig in your Windows search bar and hit enter.  In the System Configuration window, click the "Boot tab" and then click "Advanced Options".  Make sure there is no tick in the box next to "Maximum Memory", if there is, remove it, click "OK" and then click "Apply" and "OK".  Shut down your PC.  Add your RAM.  Reboot.

Just checked and nope, no maximum set in Windows.

@howdyhamster,

I must say, condensing, after researching your G.Skill Aegis RAM's specifications, it should work.  I see no reason why it wouldn't/shouldn't work, as you also expected.

That being said, HP computers are notoriously finnicky when it comes to RAM and achieving specified max RAM speed.

In Maintenance and Service Guide HP EliteDesk 705 G3 Small Form Factor it says, quote: "NOTE: The system will not operate properly if you install unsupported DIMMs." and: "memory modules constructed with x4 SDRAM are not supported." And here: Installing Memory Modules; Memory Modules; Memory Module Specifications - HP EliteDesk 705 G3 Hardwa... it says, quote: "The system will not operate properly if you install unsupported memory modules. Memory modules constructed with x8 and x16 DDR devices are supported; memory modules constructed with x4 SDRAM are not supported."

And looking here, amongst fellow HP Elitedesk 705 G3 SFF Users: UserBenchmark: HP EliteDesk 705 G3 SFF Compatible Components, I found basically only these RAM models that actually are running at 2400 MHz: Hynix HMA81GU6MFR8N-UH (8GB), Samsung M378A1K43CB2-CRC (8 GB), and Crucial CT8G4DFS824A.C8FBD1 (8 GB).

Couldn't find any HP Elitedesk 705 G3 SFF rigs with fancy 'gaming' or 'high performance' RAM anywhere.

What would I do?  -Well, I have been there too, and done that too, so to speak. Perhaps you would consider returning this RAM, as -at least in my own anecdotal experiences with similar SFF's (HP Pro 6300 SFF, HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF, etc.) has shown that once RAM doesn't work or underperforms, it is most likely a dead end, I'm sorry to say.

Doesn't your RAM retailer submit to something like this: "We give a guarantee that these memory will be compatible on your EliteDesk 705 G3 SFF Computer. If you have any issues, we provide you with a life-time replacement warranty. We have a 14 days return policy, and you can return the memory if you are not satisfied"?

I can return them -- for the second time, the first RAM I bought had similar specs, but faster clock and timing, so I figured them being faster than what's recommended on the hardware reference was the issue. Are there any 16GB sticks that are known to work? The hardware reference shows that it supports up to 64GB, but all the known models on Userbenchmark are 8GB.

@howdyhamster,

The aforementioned brands' 16GB equivalent RAM models are:

Hynix HMA82GS6AFR8N-UH 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM
Samsung M471A2K43CB1-CRC 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM
Crucial CT16G4SFD824A 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM

Hope this was helpful.

If anyone finds this thread in the future, here is the exact model that worked

Hynix 16GB DDR4-2400 Non-ECC UDIMM Memory HMA82GU6AFR8N-UH

Four of these show 64GB as they should.

@howdyhamster,

Excellent!  -If you don't mind, please close this thread as an "Accepted Solution" so that future Users can find this solution easier.
