Hi,
I have Elitedesk 800 G4 tower system, as stated at intel website the Q370 chipset or 300 series motherboards support the 9th gen CPU.
my question is that can I upgrade the CPU to 9th gen? or HP has some lock on the system?

As per this support page, the 800 G4 has not be certified for use with 9th Generation Intel processors. The chipset may support it but the system BIOS would have to recognize and support it. And the available BIOS for that system does not list a CPU upgrade to 9th Generation as one of the fixes.

Well, that's seriously embarrassing as n HP machine owner. CPUs are updated each year and every user should have the right to upgrade like I don't live in the US that I just go and get an upgrade/replacement plan.
and I started to feel that I've wasted my money because at that price I could've gone with a new motherboard +cpu (that is obviously upgradeable anytime).
We should have the upgrade option or an update to BIOS.

This article may help. It points out that the jump from 7th Generation to 8th was in their words significant. But 8th to 9th was pretty negligible. I usually build a desktop and trying to keep up with the latest CPU market is pretty tough. A good example is that the B450 motherboards for Ryzen had a BIOS update from 2nd to 3rd Generation but will not be upgradeable for the next Generation even though they are all AM 4 sockets. Again it all falls onto a BIOS update and in AMD's case they are not supporting it so you have to go new MB and B570 MB.

Well, AMD just released a statement that they will support 4th gen on B450 motherboards via BIOS update. https://www.pcworld.com/article/3543777/amd-b450-x470-motherboards-will-support-ryzen-4000-chips.htm...

Talk about a fast pivot. Only a few days ago AMD said no. There must have been a fair amount of discontent shall we say. I see that was only posted 2 days ago. And now I have learned something from you and I appreciate it. As I was saying...things change fast in the world of computing. So possibly there will either be a BIOS change from HP or a moderator can jump in and update us as to whether the 9th generation has been added.
Thanks again for your input!
