Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Last shutdown seemed normal. Now when turned on I get no video output ( DVI or VGA). All i get is a constant blinking HDD light on the front panel. I’m thinking the onboard video has died.
Can I bypass the onboard video and install a new card.

Hi @RoyL23112,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

It’s possible that the onboard video on your HP Envy desktop H8-1520T has failed, leading to the lack of video output. You can indeed bypass the onboard video by installing a new dedicated graphics card, but there are a few steps to consider before proceeding:

1. Check for Basic Issues First

  • Monitor Connection: Ensure that the monitor is properly connected and functioning. Test the monitor with another device to rule out any monitor issues.
  • Cables: Confirm that the DVI or VGA cables are securely connected and not damaged.
  • Power: Verify that the computer is receiving power and that all fans are spinning when the power button is pressed.

2. Reset BIOS/CMOS

  • Clear CMOS: Sometimes, clearing the CMOS can resolve issues related to onboard video or other hardware:
    1. Turn off the computer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Open the case and locate the CMOS battery (a small, round, silver battery on the motherboard).
    3. Remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then reinsert it.
    4. Reconnect the power and try to boot the system again.

3. Install a Dedicated Graphics Card

  • Choose a Compatible Graphics Card: Make sure the new graphics card is compatible with your system in terms of power supply, physical size, and slot type (likely PCIe x16).
  • Installation Steps:
    1. Power off the computer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Open the case and locate the PCIe x16 slot on the motherboard.
    3. Insert the new graphics card into the PCIe x16 slot and secure it with a screw.
    4. Connect the necessary power cables to the graphics card (if required).
    5. Connect your monitor to the new graphics card using the appropriate cable (e.g., HDMI, DVI, or VGA).
    6. Power on the computer.

4. Configure BIOS Settings

  • BIOS Configuration:
    • After installing the new graphics card, the system should automatically detect and use it. However, if it doesn’t:
      1. Access the BIOS by pressing a specific key (often F10, Del, or Esc) during startup.
      2. Look for settings related to Primary Display Adapter or Video Output and set it to use the PCIe or external card instead of the onboard graphics.

5. Install Graphics Drivers

  • Driver Installation:
    • Once the system boots with the new card, you may need to install the appropriate drivers. You can download the latest drivers from the graphics card manufacturer’s website (e.g., NVIDIA, AMD).

6. Test the System

  • Monitor Performance: Test the system to ensure the new graphics card is functioning correctly, and the video output is stable.

If the system still does not output video after these steps, there may be a more serious issue with the motherboard or other components, which might require repair or replacement.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
