I've only had my computer for a couple of months and suddenly I'm getting this error code oxc000017 and I can't open my computer! Help everything I own is on here and apparently my warranty just ran out a few weeks ago. Can I get my data back?

Hi @pcmccc,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand why this would be concerning, especially when the PC is only a few months old and you have important files stored on it.

The 0xc0000017 error is commonly associated with a memory-related startup issue, although it can also occur when Windows is unable to load properly. The good news is that this error does not automatically mean your data is lost.

As a first step, I'd like to check whether the hardware is functioning correctly.

Please run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Turn the PC off completely.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
  3. This should open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Run the Memory Test.
  5. If available, also run the Storage Test.

Once the tests are complete:

  • Please let us know whether they pass or fail.
  • If you receive a Failure ID, please share the full ID with us.

A few additional questions:

  • Are you able to access the Startup Menu (Esc) or BIOS Setup (F10)?
  • Did this begin after a Windows update, restart, or any hardware changes?
  • What is the exact HP model or product number (P/N) of the computer?

For now, I would not recommend making major changes to the drive until we've confirmed the hardware status. If the diagnostics pass, we can then look at Windows recovery options while keeping data preservation in mind.

Please note that HP does not provide data backup or data recovery services, as data backup and recovery fall outside the scope of HP support. If the data on the drive is critical, we recommend avoiding actions that could overwrite the drive until the hardware status has been confirmed.

Please let me know the results of the diagnostics and whether a Failure ID is reported, and we'll continue from there.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
