Hi @Jonsen,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your external hard drive is not being detected on your HP Pavilion 14 Laptop PC 14-Dv2000, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem.

  • Make sure the external hard drive is properly connected: Check the USB cable connecting the external hard drive to your laptop. Ensure that it is securely plugged into both the laptop and the hard drive. If you're using a USB hub, try connecting the drive directly to the laptop's USB port instead.
  • Check the USB port: Try connecting the external hard drive to a different USB port on your laptop. Sometimes, certain USB ports may not provide enough power or may be faulty. If the drive is detected when connected to a different port, it could indicate an issue with the original USB port.
  • Test the external hard drive on another computer: Connect the external hard drive to another computer to see if it is detected. If it works on another computer, it suggests that the issue might be specific to your laptop. If the drive is not detected on any computer, it could indicate a problem with the external hard drive itself.
  • Update USB drivers: Outdated or incompatible USB drivers can cause issues with device detection. Go to the official HP support website, enter your laptop model, and download the latest USB drivers available for your specific model. Install the drivers and restart your laptop.
  • Check Disk Management (Windows): If the external hard drive is not assigned a drive letter, it may not appear in File Explorer but can still be detected in Disk Management. Right-click on the Start menu, select Disk Management and look for the external hard drive in the list. If it appears, right-click on it, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths," and assign a drive letter to the external hard drive.
  • Use a different USB cable or power adapter: The USB cable or power adapter that came with the external hard drive may be faulty. Try using a different USB cable or power adapter (if applicable) to rule out any cable-related issues.
  • Test the external hard drive with a different enclosure (if applicable): If the external hard drive is using an enclosure, it's possible that the enclosure itself is causing the issue. Try removing the hard drive from the current enclosure (if possible) and connecting it directly to your laptop using a compatible SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure.

Remember to always back up your important data regularly to avoid potential data loss in case of hardware failures or other issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
