HP laptop running Windows 11 fails to charge via AC adapter unless laptop is turned off or in sleep mode. UEFI diagnostic has the 65 watt HP power supply failing the AC adapter test. primary; logic state - no AC power.
Failure id; 0G9HAM-C4PC88-XD7W3G-C1EB03
This HP has 16 GB Ram and a 1 TB SSD installed. its original power supply offered 41 watts. Today for the first time in weeks, the port light was orange briefly while the laptop was powered up displaying a browser. What is causing the adapter to not be available when it is plugged into the power port. The led glows white when the AC adapter is plugged in. no charging is taking place. uninstalling the battery driver did not fix the problem. The BIos is updated.

Well, if you decide to replace your motherboard -which is something I personally would consider if your problem was mine, it wouldn't cost you 'a couple of hundred', as you can purchase a working motherboard (p/n: L20371-601) for less than $90 via a foreign (PRC) eBay Seller as seen here, or, if you prefer to remain State-side, for $125 via a trusted eBay seller as seen here.

Welcome to our HP community forum!
According to the failure ID, it appears that the charger of your HP Notebook - 15-da0073wm (4AL76UA) may be defective:
I would suggest replacing your blue-tip (4.5*3.0mm) charger, and using a larger capacity (90-watt) power option, such as this competitively priced Amazon purchase example: Amazon.com: 90W 65W Blue Tip HP AC Adapter Laptop Charger for hp 90w ac Adapter,hp Envy Charger Cord....

Sadly, the laptop is not accepting charging even when off or in sleep mode any longer. Even swapping power supplies is not resulting in any activity, white nor orange, by the led at the power port. That leads me back to possibly a defective power port and even a motherboard problem if the port jack is replaced. As a SSD and even a WD passport external drive would not pull 10 watts, and as i had a 65W replacing the original 41W supply, i would be surprised if a 91W supply would suddenly make the laptop behave. But trying wins over speculating. i better get out a magnifying glass and see if i have bent the port pin. if i have, that would explain why no connect at all. But it would not solve the mystery i began with. i can see why you would suggest a more powerful adapter as weak adapters can yield these symptoms. i don't think a weak adapter would by diagnosed as not being present by the uefi diagnositics, however. Thanks for replying.

Yes, it could be a defective power port/jack. Not uncommon. Nice thing about an Amazon purchase though, is that you can return the product and get your money back if you so choose without too much hassle.

i had an extra 41W power supply made by hp which worked with the laptop afterwards. The laptop still exhibited charging only when in sleep mode or when turned off. Given this happens with both a 65 watt and a 41 watt, i would think this rules out the power supply/adapter. Removal and reinstallation of the battery driver produced no change. No change of power plans made a difference. i have not tried recalibrating the battery. i think failure of the laptop to recognize attachment of the AC adapter during the UEFI diagnostic test (even with the LED showing white) points to some switching problem, probably even beyond the jack. I can't find a discussion of such switching. i suspect some soldered component beyond my DIY skills. I wish I could remember if the laptop runs without the battery from just the AC power supply. i doubt it or i would have already been satisfied with that! After all, if the AC power supply is not recognized for charging, it probably is not recognized for running the computer. (Possibly hasty conclusion.) II can't see where the jack would control switching. Alas, a used motherboard would cost a couple of hundred, if i found one. And they are easy to fry. Thanks.

Thanks for the practical suggestions. I have a hunch the problem is a bad chip but use of a multimeter for that testing is a bridge too far for my present skills. Still, repairs of system file corruptions and uninstalling battery drivers has not fixed anything yet. I may have to face the music and just live with the problem or fork out for a new machine to replace my 2018 laptop. New machines may be better but I don't think the construction is more durable. I'm not going to run over my laptop like the do some of the flashlights in commercials.
