HP Pavilion Desktop - TP01-0066
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

A question for anyone who has knowledge of the power supplies for the TP01 and TG01 series HP Pavilion desktop machines.

Would anyone know why the fan on my 400W power supply (PN : 942332-001) does not spin while in use, even under heavy load? I could not find anything using the HP Virtual Support and it sent me here.

My questions (scroll down to 'History' section below for more information) :

1) Does anyone with HP have any information/specs on how these 942332-001 400W power supplies are supposed to operate under normal conditions?

2) Is there anyone with HP Support that can maybe have someone there contact me with information on that 'PWRCMD' connector on the motherboard and what, exactly, those extra three wires/pins control? Is there just some weird BIOS issue going on where the other 3 pins on the PWRCMD connector on the board are disabled (since it came with a 310W power supply) and that is why the fan is not turning ? If I yank those three extra wires out, will the fan start spinning? I assume all the Erica_Erica2 Rev A motherboards use the same BIOS.

3) Question for everyone out there, assuming the fan is bad, do you think it would it be okay to run a 400W power supply with no fan if I keep the overall system voltage below 360 Watts (90% of maximum)? From the reading I have done, this power supply is rated at 92% efficiency.

History:

I have the TP01-0066 model. It came with a 310W power supply (PN: L63964-004) installed. I have had it for almost 2 years now with no problems.

A few months ago, I was able to get a used GTX 1650 Super graphics card. I installed it into the machine and it has been working just fine. The issue is that I am extremely close to 310W when the GPU and CPU are at full load.

I was able to save up and purchase a 400W 942332-001 power supply last week and installed it into the system. I checked multiple documents on HP's web site before ordering this power supply. According to HP, this 400W power supply is used in other HP machines with the 'Erica_Erica2' motherboard like my computer has, so I assumed it would be compatible.

The fan on the power supply spins on power up, but that is the only time it will spin. Even when I run the system full on (around 320W if I engage the DVD/CD drive while testing), that fan will not spin. The fan blades just makes some weird 'twitching' motion, almost like it wants to spin, but can't. I powered off the machine and checked the fan manually and it does not appear to be stuck.

I read posts from 2019 by members Muhilla, Bobiverse, and Park_KS. They all reported similar issues. However, I did not see a definitive answer about the cause and nothing similar to this issue has been posted in the forums since 2019 (or none I can find).

Since many of those suggestions were that it had something to do with an 'idle' or 'rest' mode, I re-installed the 310 W power supply back into the system just to see what it does at idle. Even at idle, with less than 200W on the system and all the components at room temperature, the fan on the 310W power supply fan still runs at full speed the entire time the PC is on.

The only physical difference I can see between the two power supplies, other than the voltage rating, is that the cable that goes into the 'PWRCMD' plug on the motherboard has three wires on the 310W power supply, but has SIX wires on the 400W power supply. I do not know what those additional three wires do/control.

I apologize for being very long-winded in my description, but I am stumped by this one.

I would say the fan is behaving normally, but I do not like that fan twitching it does when under full load.

Thank you.

Hi

Sorry, I admit I only read the main one..
You made a request for Hp, except you probably won't get an answer from them..
only a few hp experts intervene here, and voluntarily (unless I am mistaken)
You said you have this model: PN : 942332-001

although this should maybe be able to work, it looks like you don't have the right reference, that could explain it

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Knowledge-Base/Power-Supply-Cross-Reference-for-specific-model...

erica L04618-800 400w

          L05757-800 500w

(unless it is another reference that corresponds to this model, perhaps?)
Anyway, the fan, does not work if I understood correctly, it should not be used, if it overheats it could be very dangerous
Either it does not fit, or it may be defective

Promethee,

Thank you for the suggestions. I will reach out to the seller.

I wish HP provided better support/information for questions/upgrades like this. For all I know, the PSU fan not spinning during use could be what it is supposed to do. I only know what 310W PSU did/does. I guess, at the end of the day, they do design these computers for businesses/consumers that don't plan on doing any changes outside of adding a hard drive or more memory.

Again, thank you for reaching out and for your help. I do plan to keep this thread open and will update or close it should I find out anything new or the cause/solution.
